BATH | People who need help to pay their heating bills can submit applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) beginning Nov. 18 in Bath.
Applications will be accepted from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at Pro Action of Steuben and Yates, 117 E. Steuben St., and from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Steuben County Department of Social Services (DSS), 3 E. Pulteney Square.
Beginning Dec. 9, applications will also be accepted at the courthouse at 10 W. First St. in Corning from 8:30 a.m.-noon and 12:30-4 p.m. Thursdays, and at the Office for the Aging on Broadway Mall in Hornell from 8:30 a.m.-noon and 12:30-4 p.m. Tuesdays.
These applications are for regular HEAP benefits only. Emergency benefits applications will be available Jan. 2, 2014.
Residents can also download an application or apply online at www.mybenefits.ny.gov starting Nov. 18.
Households receiving TANF or food stamps should contact DSS at 664-2500 or (800) 346-2211 to see if they automatically qualify for HEAP benefits.
Households with members who are over age 60 or receiving SSI or Social Security Disability can get help completing their application at the Steuben County Office for the Aging in Corning, Bath or Hornell.
HEAP does not provide help to repair or replace broken heating appliances. If you own your home and don't have a reliable heating source, contact DSS at 664-2000 to determine if you are eligible for help.
