  • Authorities say they’ve launched a homicide investigation after a 24-year-old Hammondsport man was found dead in his cell at a maximum-security prison in Romulus.
State police say Thomas Blancke was found dead Saturday at the Five Points Correctional Facility, a 1,560-bed state prison facility that opened in 2000.
State police investigators haven’t released any other details. The state Department of Corrections is referring questions about his death to state police.
State prison officials said Blancke had been at Five Points since July after being convicted in Steuben County.
County officials initially charged Blancke with third-degree felony burglary and misdemeanor petit larceny over thefts from a building in the Town of Wayne.
He was eventually convicted of attempted burglary and sentenced to 18 to 36 months in state prison.
