A garbage truck was hit by a train Monday in Yates County, according to the Yates County Sheriff's Department.

Both the truck and the train were damaged, but the four people involved in the accident escaped injury, deputies report.

The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. on Rock Haven Road in the Town of Torrey, along the west side of Seneca Lake.

James H. VanScoter, 42, of Geneva, was driving a Feher garbage truck west on Rock Haven Road when he crossed a set of railroad tracks in front of a southbound Finger Lakes Railroad train carrying eight empty railcars, resulting in a colllision, deputies report.

The train did not derail, and there was no release of any material from either the garbage truck or the train, deputies say.

VanScoter was ticketed for failure to stop at a railroad crossing and unsafe tires. His passenger, Andrew A. Palmer, 21, of Seneca Falls, was unhurt.

Both men aboard the train - Erwin Kistner, 62, and Timothy Campbell, 22 - were also unhurt.

The Yates County Sheriff's Department was assisted at the scene by the Dresden Fire Department and a New York State Police commercial vehicle inspection unit.
