HORNELL — A Hornell man has been charged with 15 counts of possession of sexual performance of a child.
William J. Smith, 81, of Bennett Street, was arrested Thursday, arraigned in city court and released on his own recognizances with stipulations.
A police department investigator said authorities have not identified any local victims in the sexually explicit child photographs, allegedly discovered on Smith's computer hard drive.
"It looks to be images that were downloaded from the internet," said Police Chief Ted Murray.
Hornell police obtained a search warrant for the computer and hard drive last spring, after the department was alerted by staff at a local store where Smith's computer had been taken for service, police said.
The computer was then sent to the FBI for forensic analysis, Murray said.
The arrest was made after the police department received the results of the FBI analysis, Murray said.
