  • CORNING | The organizers of the Wineglass Marathon have announced which organizations will benefit from this year’s event.
Runners signing up online will have the option to donate to Girls on the Run of the Southern Tier, the Food Bank of The Southern Tier and the Wineglass College Scholarships.
Race directors Sheila Sutton and Mark Landin said they’ve decided to link the event to the local organizations after a strong response at last year’s event.
“We started last year with the OneFund for victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and had an overwhelming response,” Sutton said. “We wanted to continue the support from the runner community this year.”
Girls on the Run of the Southern Tier was established in 2012 to offer running training for girls in third through eighth grades. The program includes 24 lessons to train for a 5K run, along with lessons that “inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem-solving skills and make healthy decisions,” according to the group.
Contributions to the Food Bank will benefit the organization’s Back Pack Program, which in the 2012-2013 school year distributed more than 18,300 packs of food to more than 550 children in Steuben County.
The other option, the Wineglass College Scholarships, is a new program to be established at the Community Foundation to offer scholarships to one male and one female runner graduating from Corning, Bath or Campbell-Savona schools. Those schools are along the route of the Wineglass run.
“We have long wanted to find a way to help local runners in their college pursuits,” Landin said. “Establishing these scholarships reinforces how important education and achieving life goals is to the Wineglass.”
Along with those optional donations, Wineglass organizers will continue to donate race proceeds to other local organizations that are involved in the planning and operation of the race.
Last year, almost $50,000 was distributed to more than 40 groups.
This years Wineglass Marathon weekend is Oct. 3-5, and will feature a 5K run, a full marathon and half-marathon.
