The investigation continues into the cause of a fatal fire Monday morning on West Steuben Street in downtown Bath.
“We’re looking at electrical issues,” Steuben County Fire Inv. Joe Gerych said Tuesday.
One person was killed and another injured in the early-morning fire at a second-floor apartment above Sherwood’s Wine & Liquor at 12 W. Steuben St.
The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of the next of kin, the Bath Village Police Dept. said Tuesday.
The survivor – an unidentified male – jumped out of a second-floor window after he awoke to flames and smoke, said Bath Fire Chief David Dowdle. The man was treated and released at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital.
Three firefighters suffered minor injuries; one was treated and released at Ira Davenport.
The building, owned by Marleah Sherwood, sustained major fire damage to the upper floor and smoke and water damage to the first floor, Dowdle said.

Also responding to the scene were the Bath VA, Hammondsport, Kanona, Savona, Prattsburgh, Campbell, Cohocton, Avoca, Pulteney and Wayne fire departments as well as the Steuben County Office of Emergency Management and Bath Ambulance.
