  • Corning Police: 2 charged after traffic stop uncovers drugs, cash

  • Two people were arrested Monday afternoon after a traffic stop on East Pulteney Street uncovered heroin, cocaine and cash, Corning City Police reported. The driver of the vehicle, Matthew D. Phenes, 28, of 1166 W. Church St., Elmira, was charged with two counts of third-degree felony criminal possession of a controlled substance, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, and one count of unlawful possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor. A passenger, Cheyanne M. Dufresne, 21, of 52 Vankirk Road, Newfield, was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana. Police said they pulled over the vehicle at approximately 3:41 p.m. for a traffic violation. During the stop, heroin, cocaine, packaging materials, approximately $3,000 in cash, marijuana and Oxycodone pills were discovered in the vehicle, police said. Phenes was sent to Steuben County Jail on $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 property bond. Dufresne will appear in Corning City Court at a later date. The Steuben Country Sheriff's Office and K-9 officer Daimon also responded to the scene. The investigation continues and more arrests are possible, police said.
