  • The Southeast Steuben County Library will receive a $74,919 construction grant from the state, local lawmakers in Albany announced Friday.
The library will use the funds for broadband connectivity and window replacements, according to a joint press release from Sen. Tom O’Mara, R-Big Flats, and Assemblymen Phil Palmesano, R-Corning, and Chris Friend, R-Big Flats.
The construction grants, administered by the New York State Library, will help libraries throughout the state better accommodate users with disabilities, provide Internet and technology services and allocate more space for collections or computers, as well as make upgrades to buildings, the lawmakers said.
Other Southern Tier libraries receiving funding through the New York Library’s Construction Grant Program are:
    • Steele Memorial Library | $59,482 to replace the elevator.
    • Dutton S. Peterson Memorial Library | $8,073 for roof upgrades.
    • Montour Falls Memorial Library | $5,250 for installation of two furnaces.
    • Avoca Free Library | $3,887 for overall building safety renovations and improvements.
    • Cohocton Public Library | $6,000 for energy efficiency upgrades.
    • Savona Free Library | $4,762 for the installation of a new staircase to enhance safety and accessibility, and additional disabled parking accommodations.
    • Southern Tier Library System | $16,000 for meeting room accessibility, energy efficiency and broadband improvements.
    • Wimodaughsian Free Library | $7,244 for a new handicapped-accessible front door.
    • Penn Yan Public Library | $166,394 for exterior improvements including parking lot upgrades, outdoor lighting and handicapped accessibility.
“A public library is a fundamental resource for area families, seniors and countless other community residents,” the lawmakers said in a joint statement. “We’re hopeful that these grants will help local libraries better afford and address their renovation needs.”
