  • Guthrie Corning Hospital will give the public a chance to check out its new $146 million facility on Sunday.
While it won’t open until July 12, an open house will be held from noon-3 p.m. Sunday to unveil the 232,000-square-foot new hospital, which has been under construction for the past three years on a 68-acre site just off Interstate 86, Exit 48 in East Corning.
“Anyone is welcome, and there will be self-guided tours,” said Carolyn Handrick, Guthrie’s public relations manager. “So as people come, we’ll be giving them a map of the facility, and we’ll have people stationed throughout the hospital to help with the tours.”
Administrators, doctors, nurses and other staff will be on hand, Handrick said. Staff members will be in their respective departments to show folks the state-of-the-art new equipment and technology, she added.
The adjacent new Guthrie Cancer Center will also be included in the open house.
In a conference room in the new hospital, there will be historical photos and scrapbooks of the old Corning Hospital on display, as well as a magician and coloring books for kids. There will be food and refreshments in a tent behind the hospital.
The last time a new hospital opened in Corning was about a century ago. Only one other hospital has been built in New York State in the past 20 years.
“Everyone is very excited,” Handrick said. “The employees are very proud of this facility.”
