  • Part of downtown Penn Yan was barricaded Saturday afternoon after a section of the already heavily damaged Owl's Nest building on Seneca Street collapsed, knocking down two utility poles with at least three transformers and a web of utility lines.
Penn Yan Fire Chief Jeff Housel said the building collapsed as contractors were building a ramp to the building from the Basin Street parking lot area in preparation to demolish the building Monday. The structure became unstable and collapsed.
Initial reports indicating that two people might be trapped in the rubble were unfounded, said Housel.
The only building where power was disrupted is the building at the corner of Main and Seneca where the laundromat is located.
The vacant Owl’s Nest was damaged beyond repair during May’s flash floods.
