  • Race Fever hits Corning on Thursday

  • The 29th annual Race Fever, the street party on Corning’s Bridge Street that kicks off NASCAR Sprint Cup weekend at Watkins Glen International, is set for 5-9 p.m. Thursday.
    The event features Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt Jr. show cars on display, as well as the WGI pace car and Airgas Racing hauler.
    There will also be race cars from local tracks including Woodhull Raceway, Wyoming County Speedway and Oswego Speedway. The Twisted Toys 4x4 Club will have trucks, Jeeps and Rock Bouncers, and Moe’s Karting World will have a display.
    Other highlights include a Pit Stop Challenge, Bobby K inflatables, the Eurobungy amusement ride.
    Vendors will be selling NASCAR merchandise and other racing souvenirs, and food vendors will also be on hand.
    There will be live music by Whistle Pig, and live broadcast by local classic rock station 95 the Met.
    There will be drawings for WGI race tickets, NASCAR merchandise, Woodhull Raceway tickets at the Gaffer District booth, as well as free balloons and temporary tattoos for kids.
    The annual Crystal City Duck Race - a benefit for Corning Meals on Wheels - will be held at 7:30 p.m., when bags of yellow ducks will be tossed off the Bridge Street Bridge into the Chemung River.
    Folks can buy ducks until 7:15 p.m. at a booth in front of J&T Auto Cafe, and the owners of the winning ducks get prizes including cash and gift certificates.    
    The Bridge Street business district and several side streets and lots will be closed to traffic from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday for Race Fever.
