A fire early Thursday morning heavily damaged a mobile home in Maplehurst Park, and both the homeowner and a firefighter were sent to the hospital.

Maplehurst Park is located just off County Route 223/Breesport Road, near the intersection with State Route 13.

The call came in around 3 a.m., said Don Fischer, chief of the Horseheads Town and Country Fire Department.

An elderly man who lives in the mobile home was able to escape the blaze, but was later taken to Arnot Ogden Medical Center after complaining of breathing problems, Fischer said.

Firefighters had the fire knocked down within an hour, and were on scene until about 6 a.m.

A Town and Country firefighter suffering from dehydration was also taken to the hospital, Fischer said.

The fire was contained to the bedroom, but the rest of the mobile home suffered smoke, heat and water damage and was likely a total loss, Fischer said.

The resident told firefighters he left a candle burning in the bedroom.
