In times of crisis, residents in central Steuben County could be asked to evacuate to Bath Central School.
The BCS district board agreed unanimously Wednesday to a proposal to be used as an emergency shelter by the American Red Cross.
BCS Superintendent Joe Rumsey said the agreement calls for the school to be used on a local or regional basis, at the discretion of the superintendent.
In the event of an emergency, the Red Cross would provide a shelter manager to work with an official appointed by the district. The school also would provide food and custodial services as needed, with the costs reimbursed by the Red Cross.
Rumsey said reimbursement of utilities, and a smoking policy still need to be discussed. The district prohibits smoking on campus, but officials understand some evacuees may want a place to smoke.
In other action, the board reviewed preliminary plans to replace the timber-styled playground at Vernon E. Wightman Primary School. District officials agreed to dismantle it after complaints by the school’s insurance carrier.
The board will meet with architects in early February, followed by a meeting with the community at 7 p.m. Feb. 13.
School officials hope to have plans for the playground completed by the end of February.
