The 193rd edition of the longest continuously running county fair in America, a summer tradition since 1819, is now a pleasant memory.
The fair has always been centered around agricultural education, said manager Mary Learn, and this year is no different, she said.
In the animal barns, youths from the local 4H program watered and fed their dairy cows, goats, sheep, pigs and chickens, getting them ready to show. In a nearby display hall, judges checked out everything from flowers and vegetables to needlework and baked goods, all entered for competition.
Meanwhile, farmers tinkered with their antique tractors and hay balers, also on display.
The headliner for the nightly grandstand shows will be country singer Neal McCoy, who performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
“He played here two years ago, in 2010, and we had a lot of requests to bring him back,” Learn said. “I was getting calls at home afterward. Some people were telling me it was the best show they’d ever seen.”
All in all, it’s pretty affordable entertainment, Learn says.
“It’s good for families,” she said.
