Layoffs are possible at the Bombardier Transportation facility in Kanona next year.
A 90-day warning notice was filed this week with the New York State Department of Labor.
The 135,000-squarefoot facility, located just off Interstate 86 near the Kanona exit, overhauls and refurbishes passenger rail cars. It employs 35 workers.
According to Bombardier spokeswoman Maryanne Roberts, the layoffs would begin in March and be done in phases.
The primary cause, Roberts said, is that a major contract to overhaul rail cars for the Canadian city of Edmonton will be
completed in the spring.
Although the company is actively pursuing new contracts for the Kanona facility, there could be layoffs until new work comes in, she said. The exact numbers and timing have yet to be determined.
The worst-case scenario, Roberts added, is that all 35 workers would be laid off, meaning a temporary closure of the facility beginning in September.
“It’s possible there could be a gap between contracts,” she said.
Bombardier Transportation is a large international company that manufactures and services rail vehicles, and makes related equipment.
It also has a sister company, Bombardier Aerospace, that manufactures civilian aircraft such as business jets.
Between the two, Bombardier employs about 75,000 worldwide.
