U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand , D-N.Y., have introduced legislation in Congress to dedicate the Tyrone Post Office in honor of Army Spc. Christopher Scott, a local soldier killed in 2011 while serving in Afghanistan.
Scott "personified patriotism and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation," and naming the Tyrone Post Office in his honor would "help to preserve his legacy as one of New York's heroes," Reed said Thursday.
Scott, 21, was a military police officer who was serving in the Army's 101st Airborne Division. He was killed while on patrol Sept. 3, 2011 in Afghanistan's Kandahar province, when insurgents attacked his unit with small arms fire.
Scott, a 2009 Dundee Central School graduate, was two months into his first tour of duty, and he'd been due to return home 12 days later to get married.
He spent time living in both Tyrone and Dundee growing up.
Gillibrand called Scott "a true hometown hero who will always remain in the hearts of his loved ones and the Finger Lakes community ... He answered the highest call and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, serving with bravery, honor and integrity."
If Reed and Gillibrand's bill is passed in Congress, the Tyrone Post Office - located on County Route 23 - would be renamed as the Specialist Christopher Scott Post Office Building.
A post office in Hornell was recently renamed in honor of Marine Lance Cpl. Zachary D. Smith, 19, a Hornell native who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. Reed and Gillibrand backed that legislation as well.
