Village of Bath utilities customers could see the cost of a drink of water go up, with trustees holding a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 1.
The village board agreed Monday to a proposed first-year rate increase of 17 percent for water services. Costs would jump another 14.5 percent during the second year, with a 12.7 percent hike in the third year.
The proposal means customers, during the first year, would pay $1.15 more per month for the first 500 gallons or less, with slight increases for more usage. The current village water rate is $6.75 for the first 500 gallons or less.
Under the plan, town customers would pay $1.44 more per month for the first 500 gallons or less, with increase for more use. The current town water rate is $8.44 for the first 500 gallons or less.
BEGWS officials told trustees water usage has dropped by 57 million gallons during the past three years, with revenues decreasing a total of $93,000 over the same period. The closing of Philips Lighting's phosphorus plant is the primary cause for the drop in water use, according to Village Mayor Donna Simonson. Water conservation measures also added to a reduction in consumer use, she said. Total costs for water service has increased $48,500 since 2008, according to the BEGWS report.
Left unchecked, the village utility could lose another $385,000 by 2013, according to the report.
Trustees rejected another rate increase plan calling for a 45 percent hike in the water rate the first year, with no further increases. The board also turned down a plan to keep the first rate hike at 10 percent, followed by larger increases during the second and third years.
If approved by the board after a public hearing in December, the water rate hike would be the second rate increase charged by the utility this year.
Trustees approved a sewer rate hike last May.
