Dana Lyon Middle School students Tyler Brzezinski, Camden Robbins, Alex Stewart, Logan Strong, Lazarus Wallace and Christopher Ward recently experienced the work of architects’ first hand. The students worked closely with local architect Jeff Robbins of Hunt Engineers, Architects and Land Surveyors, and Adviser Karen Eichensehr as they participated in the Architectural Awareness Program.
The program, sponsored in part by GST BOCES Career Development Council, teaches middle school students about the field of architecture by involving them in adaptive reuse projects within their communities.
The students chose to re-develop Davenport Farm into a recreation park with numerous playing fields, a go-kart track and paint ball course. After researching the farm’s history as a girls’ home for Civil War orphans and touring the site, as well as a trip to Hunt for an in depth view of an architectural firm, students used Google Earth and Google SketchUp to design site plans and created a PowerPoint presentation detailing their plans for reuse.
The team presented their project at the Corning Museum of Glass auditorium in February and were treated to lunch, a museum tour and hot glass show.
