• Book signing and talk with local author Robert W. Gregg will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 11 at the Fred & Harriett Taylor Memorial Library in Hammondsport. Robert W. Gregg has written many mystery stories set in the Keuka Lake area where he has a summer home. Talk with Mr. Gregg about his stories including the latest one entitled ‘The Haunting of Hawks Nest’. •     The Hammondsport American Legion Unit #407 will hold their monthly meeting at 2 p.m. today.
• The town of Bath has announced that the Public Hearing on proposed Water District #7, Green Acres, that was scheduled for September 28 has been changed to 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Bath Village Board Room in the Municiple Building.
•      The Steuben County Veteran’s Memorial will hold a monthly business meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, October 9 in the dining room of the facility located at 7230 State Route 54, Bath, NY. All regular Steuben County Veterans Memorial members are welcome to attend the meeting. Support your veteran’s organization.
•     The Wine Country Toastmasters will meet from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Steuben County Health Care Facility, in the guest dining room on the second floor, 7009 Rumsey Street Extension, Bath. •  CCC will host CollegeFest2011 from 1-4 p.m. today at the Academic and Workforce Development Center, 318 Madison Avenue, Elmira. Games, prizes and free food. Community events
• “This & That” Bazaar will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Spring Meadow Apartments, 135 Water Street, across from Burger King, Bath. Baked goods, white elephant, crafts, plants, paperbacks, kids table-gifts for them to buy, raffles and much more. Lunch for sale. •  The next “Building Bridges, Building Community” forum is set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Bath. • The Advisory Council Travel Group of Steuben County RSVP has announced a 3 day-2 night trip from Dec. 2 - 4 to Washington, DC. The package includes tours of the White House, the U. S. Botanical Garden, Mount Vernon, the National Cathedral and Embassy Row.  Also included are tours of the various War Memorials and musical performances at the Mormon Temple Visitorís Center and the Kennedy Center.  
The scheduled hosts for this trip will be Sheldon and Brenda West.  The cost is $369 per person double occupancy. Insurance information is available upon request. Proceeds from RSVP group travel are used to enhance volunteer programs throughout Steuben County.  Bus pick-up is tentatively scheduled for Hornell, Bath, and Painted Post. • The Champagne Whirl-A-Ways Square Dance Club will meet Saturday at the Vernon Wightman Elementary School, Bath. The dance will be Cider and Donuts Night with caller Gary Pruyne and cuer Judy and Jake Doane.
• A Penny Social will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, October 15 at Charles E. Wescott American Legion, 14 W. William St., Bath. Doors open at 1 p.m. for number purchase and drawing startes at 2 p.m. Bake sale, door prizes, 50/50, theme basket raffles will be held to benefit “CASA of the Southern Tier,” Corning. Donations of items for the bake sale would be appreciated and need to be at Post Home by noon on Saturday, October 15. Also excepting items to fill their tables, please no junk, clothes or shoes. • Reservations are being taken for the third annual County Historical Society “Leaf Peeping Cemetery Tour” scheduled for 9 a.m. Monday, October 10. (Columbus Day).
A Covered Wagon bus will leave the Magee House in Bath to visit cemeteries in Bath, Savona, Campbell, Hornby, Corning, Caton, Lindley and Erwin. To reserve a seat on the bus send $55, which includes the dinner, to the Steuben County Historical Society at Box 349 in Bath, NY 14810 as soon as possible. Open to everyone.
• Bingo will be held at the Bath Volunteer Fire Department, 50 E. Morris Street on Monday. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the game begins at 7 p.m.
•  St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Bath will hold their 28th Annual Old Fashioned German Sauerkraut Supper Saturday, October 22 at the church. A menu of sauerkraut cooked with pork, homemade mashed potatoes, homemade applesauce, green beans, light and dark breads, and sherbet and cookies will be served. Sauerkraut and pork loin will be available for those who do not wish the sauerkraut and wieners. A glass of beer will be included with dinner for those who like it along with coffee, tea or milk. Pretzel sticks will be available for munching. Serving will begin at 5 p.m. Take-outs will be available. Tickets will be on sale at the door and cost is $8 for adults and $3 for children under the age of 12.
• The Bath Peace and Justice Group will show a documentary at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the cafe of the Arc of Steuben, One Arc Way, Bath (off Route 54 behind the Simmons-Rockwell dealership). Discussion to follow. The movie will be preceded by a potluck dinner at 6:30 p.m.
All are welcome. This event is free and open to the public.
•  The Windmill Farm and Craft Market will hold their annual fall Jeff Stowell Car & Bike Show from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at The Windmill, 3900 Rt. 14A, Penn Yan. For entry information call Stowell at 315-946-6418. The pre-entry fee is $6 and on the day of the show it’s $10. There will be lots of awards and dash plaques for the first 100 entries. Classes/training
• CASA of the Southern Tier, Inc. is offering the CASA 101 Independent Study Advocate training from 5-9 p.m. Tuesday at Southeast Steuben County Corning Library, 300 Nasser Civic Center Plaza, second floor conference, room 225.
Application, interview and background checks required. Applications can be downloaded at casasoutherntier.org. This is an Independent Study Training, requiring at home work and group debriefing sessions. If you are interested in participating please call Kristie Kinney at 607-936- CASA (2272) to schedule an interview prior to the start of class.
• The Bath Central School District will offer continuing education courses this fall, including yoga, mystery quilt beginners, Zumba, public speaking. For dates and times, costs and register for a Community Education class visit the district website at bathcsd.org.
The Haverling Athletic Complex is now open and features a fitness room, indoor track and use of the pool, including open swim and lap swim and aqua aerobics at affordable rates.

•   ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is seeking local host families for boys and girls from a variety of countries around the world. The students are 15-18 years of age coming to this area for the upcoming high school year or semester. Students are screened and qualified by ASSE. •  Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry is now open from 3-4 p.m. Tuesdays and from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. The pantry serves the Hammondsport School District only, sponsored by all the Hammondsport churches and housed in Saint James Episcopal Church. The entrance is off Main Street at the rear.  

Volunteers
•  RSVP volunteers needed for the following: Project Care is looking for volunteers to assist older adults in the Greater Bath area to remain at home.  Services needed include friendly visits, transportation, shopping, telephone calls, and light chores.  Training provided; Steuben Coordinated Transportation needs volunteer drivers to transport individuals to appointments.  Mileage reimbursement available; Area schools need volunteers to serve as Reading Buddies providing one to one assistance to struggling readers in grades K-3; Literacy Volunteers needs volunteers to work with adults on reading and literacy skills.  Training will be provided in October.

Emergency loan applications
The Farm Service Agency is accepting applications in Steuben County for disaster emergency loan assistance for the following:
• Damages and losses caused by excessive rain which occurred June 1, 2010. Family farmers who have suffered losses of at least 30 percent of their production due to the frost, freeze, high winds, hail, excessive rain and cold temperatures. Applications for loans under this emergency designation will be accepted until Aug. 17.
• Damages and losses caused by high winds, excessive rain, lightning, and flash flooding from April 26-28. Applications for loans under this emergency designation will be accepted until Feb. 10, 2012.
• Damages and losses caused by a tornado, high winds, hail, excessive rain, flash flooding and flooding from April 1 and continuing. Applications for loans under this emergency designation will be accepted until Feb. 10, 2012.
• Damages and losses caused by high winds from May 28-31. Applications for loans under this emergency designation will be accepted until Feb. 10, 2012.
• Damages and losses caused by tornados, high winds, hail, excessive rain, flash flooding and flooding from March 7-June 12. Applications for loans under this emergency designation will be accepted until Feb. 17, 2012.
• Damages and losses caused by severe storms and flooding from April 25-28. Applications for loans under this emergency designation will be accepted until March 13, 2012.
• Damages and losses caused by excessive rain, flash flooding and flooding and cooler than normal temperatures March 1-June 1. Applications for loans under this emergency designation will be accepted until April 25, 2012.
• Damages and losses caused by excessive rain, flash flooding, flooding, high winds, lightning and cooler than normal temperatures which occurred Aug. 16. Family farmers who have suffered losses of at least 30 percent of their production due to the frost, freeze, high winds, hail, excessive rain and cold temperatures. Applications for loans under this emergency designation will be accepted until April 16, 2012.
Farmers must be unable to obtain credit from private commercial lenders. The interest rate on emergency loans is 3.75 percent. Applications and more information are available at the FSA office, 415 West Morris St., Bath. For more information call 776-7398.

Child Care
Steuben Child Care Project gives child care providers information on a federally funded program which reimburses providers for nutritious meals served to the children in their program. The new on-line claiming process makes the required recordkeeping a snap, taking less than 5 minutes a day.  
SCCP helps child care providers access the funding that they are eligible to receive, as well as, support the providers to operate their businesses as economically as possible.  For more information on child care programs call 776-2126 or 1 (800) 553-2033.
