Long time Bath residents Rowland (Bill) and Evelyn Matthews recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.
When Evelyn and Rowland (Bill) Matthews married in 1940, oranges could be had for a penny apiece, gas was 18 cents a gallon, and the first nylon stockings were for sale. The United States was gearing up for WWII with the creation of a draft and FDR was poised to win his third term in office.
Evelyn and Bill recently celebrated their 70th anniversary with a family dinner in Bath. The couple was married October 13, 1940 at the Methodist Parsonage in Hamburg, NY. Bill, born in Hallstead, PA to Ernest and Belle Matthews, married Evelyn Longwell born in Bath to Walter and Stella Longwell.
Bill, 94, worked for the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad for 40 years, and Evelyn, 93, worked for the Steuben County Department of Social Services for 25 years. They have lived in Bath their entire married lives, owning homes on East Williman Street, then Mitchellsville Road (for 50 years) and now at Primrose Place. They raised three daughters who were all present for the celebration: Linda (Bob) Tetor of Bath, Laurene (Jim) Grimes of North Ridgeville, OH and Deborah (Paul) Picciano of Canton, CT. They have seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
