BATH | There will be some changes this year at the Steuben County Fair, starting with Seniors Day, which has been moved to the fair’s kick-off Tuesday, according to county fair Secretary Mary Learn.
Along with a reduced admission of $2.50 until 5 p.m., the day will also feature a nod to the fair’s history with harness racing, she said.
“The first fair always started with race,” she said. “Not harness racing, but still racing. “It’s not so busy, the seniors can relax and enjoy the day.”
The Coleman Bros. Shows are back on the midway to entice fairgoers with rides and games.
Other new events include a turkey calling contest Wednesday and a fishing pond – not the pond you pull ducks out of for prizes, but a demonstration pond to show would-be rod-and-reelers the reel, ummm, real way to cast out a line and catch a fish, she said.
Throughout the week free entertainment will include the Champagne Whirlaways, concerts by Burnin’ Hills and Brad Ordway, and the White River Band.
Other daily crowd pleasers like ventriloquist Sylvia Fletcher, Rosaire’s Royal Racing Pigs and agricultural exhibits are also free.
One event that is gaining popularity each year is the Talent Show on Thursday, which provides unknown talents a spot on the center stage, and the audience a glimpse at potential future stars.
Other traditional fare includes 4-H events, a water melon eating contest, pie eating contest, a drawing for a free bicycle and a children’s ID program.
Night time highlights range from a demolition derbies and tractor pulls to the KSR Night of Destruction with Monster Trucks, including “Big Foot.”
Headlining the fair this year is Country music legend Neal McCoy, with 11 albums and numerous hits behind him. McCoy will perform Saturday night.
Learn said all the fair buildings will be open this year.
“There are a lot of free things,” she said. “So come on the grounds and enjoy yourself.”
Admission to the fairgrounds is $5 for those 13 and older. Children 12 and under are free.
