Avoca brings home first tennis title

HAMMONDSPORT - For the first time in the school's history, the Avoca girls' tennis team went undefeated and brought home a sectional title Thursday.

The top-seeded Tigers defeated No. 3 Clyde- Savannah, 5-0, to clinch the Section V, Class D title.

"For me personally, I feel phenomenal," Avoca coach Scott Carroll said. "I never

thought this would happen. We set our goals high, and it's not every day you achieve all your goals.

"They earned it," he added. "I'm so ecstatic and happy for them. A coach can only do so much. They have to go out and execute, and they did all season long."

Jen Wlodarczyk won at first singles against Kristi Molisani by scores of 6-3, 7-5.

Nina Wlodarczyk won, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-4 at second singles against Trisha Yadanza, while Caitlin Parks rounded out the singles sweep with on a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision over Kristen Rice at third singles.

"It wasn't very easy, the final (5-0) score is not indicative of the overall match," Carroll said. "It was much closer than the score shows. A lot of matches went to three sets.

"We knew coming in they were strong in singles," he added. "Nina and Caitlin really elevated their games."

Nicole Becker and Ashley Edwards won at first singles, while Brittany Bowen and Stephanie Davis teamed to pick up the victory at second singles.

"I'd like to thank Dave Hall for laying the foundation," Carroll said. "I'd also like to thank coaches Karen Dzien and Pat Wright.

"It's also a huge win for the community of Avoca," he added. "I want to thank everyone for all the support they gave us this year."
