Letters to the Editor

This is our last edition for publishing ads or letters to the editor concerning the upcoming Nov. 7 election that we deem controversial or may require equal time for a rebuttal.

Deadline for submissions for this edition was noon Oct. 26. The only ads or letters accepted the last Sunday prior to the election will be rebuttals to early submissions or those or those deemed non controversial.

The Steuben Courier-Advocate welcomes Letters to the Editor. Indeed, we encourage them. We must, however, set guidelines to be followed by letter writers.

We prefer letters be typed and double-spaced. Handwritten letters will be accepted, but only when written legibly. E-mail is preferred when possible.

Letters must include the typed or printed name, address and telephone number of the author. Though only the writer's name and hometown will appear with a letter, no letters will be published without all the above information included on the original copy.

Letters longer than 12" (approximately two typewritten pages, double-spaced, and 9 points of type size) will not be considered for publication.

Thank-you type letters will not be accepted. Our Letters to the Editor column is reserved for comments of a topical and current events nature. The Steuben Courier-Advocate offers a "Card of Thanks" as paid advertising.

We will not accept letters of endorsement for candidates or propositions. A letter may point out attributes of a candidate or proposition, but it cannot solicit an endorsement. Endorsements can be handled by our sales department as a paid political ad.

Letters identifying problems in the community must include solutions to those problems. Letters not including constructive solutions will be rejected.

All letters are subject to editing, and we reserve the right to do so for length and content. In the event major changes are necessary, writers will be consulted before their letters are published.

Letters will be rejected when they do not meet the abovestated specifications, or if they contain unfounded allegations or unverifiable information.
