CAMPBELL - A 16-yearold Campbell-Savona high school student was charged Monday, October 30, with criminal possession of a controlled substance after allegedly planning to sell a prescription drug to other students.

According to Painted Post State Police Sr. Inv. Curt Eaton, school officials discovered Joshua M. Button had Dextroamphetamine in school and had planned to sell it.

Button, of Forty Dollar Road, Campbell, was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony, and second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

Dextroamphetamine is used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Eaton could not comment on where Button got the drug.

Lisa Hawken, the school's principal, said Button was caught with the drug October 23. The following day, a state police K-9 unit swept the building looking for drugs. Nothing was found, she said.

Button, who received a fiveday suspension from school, did not sell any of the drugs.

"None of the drugs were sold at school," Hawken said.

The investigation was conducted by Trooper Rick Newell, who is the school's resource officer.

"He does an outstanding job," Eaton said of Newell. "He does it all. It's not just the law enforcement aspect of it. He does a lot in the district there."

The arrest comes two weeks after five freshman girls at Elmira Free Academy ingested prescription drugs and had to be treated at a local hospital.

"Certainly, information at EFA alerts us all to those types of situations," Hawken said.

Button was arraigned in Campbell Town Court and was released on his own recognizance. He will appear in court at a later date.
