Letters to the Editor I would like to offer a novel solution to the divisionist conundrum of same-sex marriage. Obviously, the sooner this is resolved, the sooner we all can re-focus on real issues. My solution, simply stated is this: The Separation of Church and State. I would propose (to quote a few dear old friends of mine) the following federal legislation: That "Congress shall pass no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Possibly this could be attached to, become part of, our constitution's first amendment right to freedom of speech. Me thinks it would fit in quite nicely. As radical as it may sound at first, it would leave the nation's various churches to wrangle within themselves for a resolution concerning the definition of Holy Union, thus freeing the Body Politic to examine more pertinent problems such as undeclared war, state sponsored terrorism and torture, violations of the public trust, and the rise of the evil multi-national Corporate Empire. Your thoughts, please. Larry D. Cook Bath |
