Your Community Book group The Hammondsport Public Library offers a book discussion group for adults, on the second Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at the library. New members are always welcome. Each year Turing Point assists families in completing their tax returns and helps them to take advantage of Earned Income and Child Tax Credits. Computer skills are required. Training is provided. Please contact Denise at 776-4575 ext. 211. LegionAuxiliary TheAmerican LegionAuxiliary of Unit 173 meets every second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles Wescott Post on William Streeet in Bath. SPCA donations The Finger Lakes SPCA is requesting area residents to continue donating returnable cans and bottles to the shelter on State Route 54. The recyclable materials are a significant source of income for the SPCA. Volunteers also are needed to assist in the delivery of returnable materials to recycling centers and in walking dogs and cleaning facilities. For further information, call 776- 3039. Volunteers needed Steuben County Health Care Facility needs shoppers, visitors, and coffee hour hosts to serve the residents. Flexible, varied hours with these tasks. Catholic Charities needs volunteers to advocate for individuals or families through the Mentoring program. Schedule is flexible. Steuben Coordinated Transportation needs drivers to transport senior citizens from Avoca, Savona, and other areas to appointments. Mileage reimbursement is available. Office for Aging s Project Care needs volunteers to assist seniors in shopping and getting to medical appointments. Bath VA needs several volunteer drivers to pick up veterans for their medical appointments. Volunteers would have use of vehicles provided by the VA. Tax counselors are needed for two different programs during the tax season of 1/15/07 through 4/15/07. Volunteers are also needed as greeters and as a media person. Living Nativity The Cohocton Assembly of God will hold a drive through living nativity from 6:30-8:30 p.m. December 8, 9, and 10, at the Cohocton Assembly of God, 31 N. Dansville St. (Rt. 415.), Cohocton. For more information call 384-5952. National Family Caregiver Month November is National Family Caregiver Month and the Steuben County Office for the Aging asks for area residents to join them in saluting the many dedicated caregivers of our community that make it possible for older adults to remain independent in their own homes. Caregivers help with errands, appointments, personal care, housekeeping, and much more. The Caregiver Resource Center provides support for caregivers through education, guidance, referrals, and encouragement. For more information call 664-2298. Holiday gift wrap The Annual Holiday Gift Wrap event will be held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Dec. 3-24 at the Holiday Gift Wrap Booth in front of Barbara Moss, Center Court, Arnot Mall Big Flats. Volunteers will wrap holiday gifts to raise funds for the Chemung- Schuyler-Steuben chapter of the American Cancer Society. The money is for cancer, research, advocacy, education, and services that benefit the Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben communities. For more information contact Louise at 734-1553 ext. 2. Joy of giving Bath Knights of Columbus are seeking toys for needy children and financial donations to provide food baskets for the elderly. Deposit new or good used toys in barrels located throught the area. The barrels are located at: North American Philips, Steuben County Office Building, Bath National Bank (West End and Hammondsport Offices), CVS Drugs, Eckerds, Save-A-Lot, KMart, P&C, Bath Legion, Steuben Trust. Tax deductible financial can be sent to: Knights of Columbus, Council 5147, PO Box 745, Bath, NY 14810. For information about food baskets contact Rocco Angus at 583- 2021 between 4-8 p.m. Sign-ups will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 321 W. Washington St., Bath. To qualify for the Toy Program, you must be 10 years of age or younger and reside in the Bath Knights of Columbus District. Santa's day off will be December 7 at Bath National Bank, Liberty Street. Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration The 26th Annual Pearl Harbor Day Commemoration will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 3 at the Bath Rod and Gun Club, Telegraph Rd., Bath. Pearl Harbor survivors and families, law enforcement officers, color guards, and guest speaker Navy Chaplin Jerry Hamblin will be attending the ceremony. Refreshments will be available following inside the Rod and Gun Club. All area residents are welcome to join the ceremony. Budget workshop The Village of Hammondsport Board of Trustees will hold a budget workshop at 4:30 p.m. December 4 in the Village Office, 41 Lake Street, Hammondsport. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the 2007/2008 General Fund Budget. Holiday Caring donors needed The holiday season is sometimes a time of struggle and hardship because there is not enough money for gifts and special meals. United Way of the Southern Tier provides a connection point for potential donors and human service agencies to join forces and make the holiday season brighter for families and children. Participating organizations and the needed services can be found at www.uwst.org/holidaycaring2006.as p. The list changes frequently, and contributors can choose from a variety of opportunities, including adopting a family and volunteering. Potential donors are asked to review the list, and then contact the organization to work out the donation details. Keep the bells ringing The Salvation Army bells is summoning people to remember those facing hardships during the holiday season. Volunteers are needed to help the fundraising effort that raises money to help local families in times of need. Bell ringing has already started and will end on Christmas Eve. Anyone wishing to help can call The Salvation Army at 962-4681, The Red Kettle Center any time of the day or nght at 1-877-764-7259, or go to www.redkettles.org and fill in the volunteer form on-line. Women Business Owners' meeting The Women Business Owners' Roundtable will hold a meeting at 9 a.m. Dec. 13 at the Small Business Development Center, 24 Denison Parkway in Corning. Denis Sweeney of Sweeney Enterprises, will present "The ABC's of a Marketing Plan with Limited Dollars". Women business owners in the Southern Tier region are invited to participate. For more information call the SBDC at 962-9461. Coping with Cancer The Centenary United Methodist Church will host a Coping with Cancer meeting at 7 p.m. Dec. 6. The topic will be the social and emotional side of cancer. All are welcome; there is no charge for attending. For more information, contact Patricia Lauzze at 607.776.2289. Living with cancer is an experience that can affect every aspect of your life. Not only is your body affected, but also your mind and your spirit. As one travels through a journey with cancer, they will find managing their feelings can be just as difficult as dealing with their medical issues. Gift shop & wrapping spree A special gift shop and wrapping spree will be held for all children up to 12 years of age. The event will be held from 1-4 p.m. Dec. 9 at the American Legion, 14 W. William St., Bath. Many items will be available for kids to buy for their grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, etc. Pick out an item and have it wrapped and ready for Christmas. This event is open to the public. |
