BATH - Led by a doubledouble by Irven Pragle and a stifling defense, Bath Haverling opened its boys basketball season with a 53- 39 win over Penn Yan Tuesday, Nov. 28.
Pragle led all scorers with 18 points and also pulled down 10 rebounds and generated four steals for the Rams (1-0).
Bath grabbed a 14-11 lead after the first quarter, then got some help from
its defense.
The Rams held Penn Yan to just four points, while scoring 12 to take a 26-15 lead into halftime.
"The defense really picked it up in the second and fourth quarters," said Bath head coach Randy Brzezinski.
Andy Ratchford netted 10 points and also tallied four steals for the Rams.
Penn Yan bounced back a bit in the third quarter by knocking down three of its four 3-pointers of the game to pull within four points entering the final quarter, but Bath's defense held the Mustangs to just five points over the final eight minutes.
"We tried some things in the third quarter that didn't work so well," Brzezinski said. "But overall, it was a wellplayed game for our first game. It was a good effort and something to build on."
Jared Kamholtz connected on three 3-pointers to lead Penn Yan with nine points.
