Thomas J. Madigan

CORNING — Thomas John Madigan, age 80, of East Lake Road, Hammondsport entered into blessed rest on Sunday, December 3, 2006 at Corning Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Tom was born November 23, 1926 in Lackawanna, to Joseph and Madeline Vogt Madigan. He grew up in East Aurora and was a veteran of World War II (Navy) and the Korean Conflict (Army). He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, James and Joe.

He was beloved husband to Janet, his wife of 55 years, whom he married on Thanksgiving Day in 1951. In their life together they have brought much joy and inspiration to those around them. Tom is also survived by his six children: Michael (Patricia) Madigan of Brewerton; Katherine (Michael) Cripps of Rochester; Patricia Madigan of Corning; John (Catherine) Madigan of Greenbelt, Maryland; Rosemary (Kenneth) Letson of Seminole, Florida; and Ann (Stephen) Campbell of Corning; nine grandchildren and many fond nieces and nephews.

As a teacher and school administrator, Tom touched the lives of thousands of young people, families and school staff. He served as principal of Northside Blodgett Middle School and of Painted Post Middle School in Corning. A dedicated community servant, Tom contributed countless hours to the many organizations and causes he supported through the years. He was an active member of St. Mary’s parish community in Bath, and served for many years on the parish council at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning. An avid golfer, he was president of the board of directors of Indian Hills Country Club in Painted Post and Bath Country Club. He served on the Wayne Town Board, the task force for the Steuben County Office on the Aging, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Calling hours were held on Thursday, December 7 at St. Mary’s Church, 32 East Morris Street, Bath. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 8 at St. Mary’s Church. Burial ceremony was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, followed by a luncheon in O’Malley Hall, St. Mary’s Church. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Tom’s name to St. Mary’s Church, as a reflection of his devotion to and support of the parish’s many ministries to the needy children and elderly in the community.
