Attend Dec.12 meeting for Lyon future In 1923, a beautiful building was built on the corner of Liberty and East Washington Streets. It was designed by a prominent architect by the name of Palmar Rogers of New York City. It was built on property owned by the Davenport and Haverling families. This property was given to the school district and was to be used for educational purposes. This building was known as “Haverling High School” and was used for Grade K to 12. It was used for all these grades until the middle 1950’s when the new schools were built. It then became known as the “Dana Lyon Middle School” until the early 2000’s. It was then sold to some people who want to demolish it so that a drug store can be built there. We really need more drug stores or dollar stores in Bath. If this happens, try to visualize this property on the main intersection in Bath with the trees removed and with a parking lot right up to the sidewalk on Liberty and East Washington Streets. The existing building can be retrofitted to apartments and condominiums and preserve the trees and green space around it. There are other areas in Bath that can be used for commercial development without destroying this corner. Please voice your concerns at the December 12 Village Board Meeting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Hall. This meeting is very important. William S. Townsend Bath |
