Avoca’s Lila Sager turns 107

BATH - This past Saturday, Lila Sager of Avoca had a special birthday.

She turned 107 years old.

Lila, wife of the late Gus Sager and the mother of three, has certainly had a full life.

Born in Avoca in 1899 she has always been an active member of her church. According to her son, Stan, of the Bath area, that is what she was most known for in her life.

“Being a part of the Baptist Church was very important to her, she did so much for them, and I guess you could say they did a lot for her,” he said.

Lila was a busy woman throughout her life, according to her son. She raised her family on a farm in Avoca and along with always being an active member in her church, she was a court attendant in the Town of Bath.

“She was always doing something,” Stan said.

These days at 107, Lila has slowed down a bit. She lives in the Steuben County Health Facility in Bath, her hearing has worsened and she needs a wheelchair to get around.

But on Thursday - two days before her birthday - Lila will be on national television. Tune in to the NBC Today Show to see Willard Scott announce Lila’s name, along with others, that have seen over 100 years go by.

“It’s going to be great to see her on TV,” Stan said. “What a great birthday present.”
