Following the saga from afar...

I have followed the Dana Lyon school saga, slightly, by way of occasional Web check-ins. I couldn’t be prouder of those of you back in Bath who have been so dogged and resourceful in fighting. Whoever tracked down the heirs to the Davenports and secured their blessing w/regard to the “primary school” portion were brilliant. Seriously.

My beloved hometown, which — and obviously I may be imagining this thru the lens of nostalgia — used to be a picture-perfect capture of the quaintness yet intrigue of small town life, has deteriorated. I am impressed by the leadership and in fact “vision” of David Wallace, whose avid interest in history I recall as early as his junior high school days, but still regret the general decline. It’s discouraging to visit there; forgive that directness.

Please keep fighting. That corner has not just quaintness and attractiveness but brings even what I guess you would call “historical drama” or “impact” to those four corners. I have never been a rabblerousing preservationist but bluntly the thought of that building--with its great memories--gone...and a strip-mall drug store there, no less-- turns my stomach.

With admiration for your remarkable work,

David Catherman (Haverling ‘68) California
