RSVP celebrates reading BATH - The Steuben County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program recently celebrated the joy of reading with a program entitled "Reading with RSVP." This annual event started six years ago to promote the importance of reading to people of all ages, and to encourage intergenerational activities. This year's event also coincided with Children's Book Week, sponsored nationally by the Children's Book Council, Inc. Many RSVP volunteers participated in the event, including: Margaret Shomers read to pre-school children at the Bath Private Nursery Program in the First Presbyterian Church. RSVP volunteer, Ash Kohout, read to students at the Hammondsport Primary School. RSVP volunteer, Judy Partridge, read to students at Prattsburgh Central School. RSVP has also been working with local schools to set up "Reading Buddy" programs that would pair volunteers age 55 or older with students who are having difficulty in reading. For more information, call RSVP at 664- 2298 in Bath. |
