SPCA donations The Finger Lakes SPCA is requesting area residents to continue donating returnable cans and bottles to the shelter on State Route 54. The recyclable materials are a significant source of income for the SPCA. Volunteers also are needed to assist in the delivery of returnable materials to recycling centers and in walking dogs and cleaning facilities. For further information, call 776-3039. Parking permits available Bath Village Police Chief David K. Rouse reports that Bath Village Parking Permits for the year 2007 are now abailable. Permit holders pay $10 per month and may park in the Municipal lot or at 10 hour parking meter locations. Permits are sold at the Bath Police Department. $ave Energy, $ave Dollars Cornell Cooperative Extension will present Save Energy, Save Dollars workshop which will help participants explore ways to reduce energy bills through no cost/low cost conservation ideas.The free workshops are being held at the Dormann Library Jan. 30, from 6-8 p.m. GST Boces course catalog The winter/spring course catalog for GST Boces Adult Education and Training programs is now available. The catalog contains descriptions of the more than 265 courses offered, including career training, online and leisure courses and trips. To receive a copy by mail, call 1-877-adulted. AAUW meeting The Bath Branch of AAUW will host a visiting scholar from the New York State Council on the Humanities at a public meeting at 7:15 p.m. March 6 at the Steuben Health Facility. Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner will discuss research on the influence of the Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) on Early American Women's Rights, and respond to questions and comments. The meeting is free to the public. MDA Casino Day American Twin Harley- Davidson will hold their First Annual Casino Day for MDA from 3-9 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Marconi Lodge of Corning, 26 W. Pulteney Street, Corning. $20 donation per ticket. Tickets are available at American Twin Harley-Davidson, Bridge Street, Corning. Proceeds to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association of South Central New York State. Meet the author Robert E. Yott will be at the Steuben County Historical Society in Bath on Tuesday, January 23 from 1-3 p.m. to sign copies of his new book "From Soldiers' Home to Medical Center: A Glance at the 125 Year History of the Bath Soldiers' Home". Mr. Yott, an Army veteran, and Civil War enthusiast, has long been fascinated with the history of the Home; this is his second book on the subject. There will be a one case exhibit on the Soldiers' Home in the Society's Reading Room. It will be centered around the Book of General Orders for the period Sept. 1884 - April 1888. Written orders were issued almost daily in this quasi-military establishment; they often referred to named individuals. Subjects included the daily schedule of events, admission to the Home, assignment of duties, promotions in rank, furloughs, punishments and discharges. The Clerk, who meticulously recorded each order, developed the habit of decorating the book with elaborate calligraphy, including scrolls, banners, ribbons, and eagles with flags. The exhibit will be up through May 1. The other exhibits at Magee House will also be open to view. The Society is at 1 Conhocton St., Bath, directly behind the Dormann Library on West Morris St. It is open to the public weekdays (except holidays) from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Communicating problems? The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Landlord meeting The Bath Area Landlord Association will hold a landlord meeting at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at Clyde F. Simon Lakeview Apartments, 105 Geneva St., Bath. Upon arriving please part in the visitor parking area, first two rows on the left as you pull into the complex. Topics will include: S.C.A.P. Inc. - Introduction to Landlords (Who are they and how can they help Landlords,) Business Forms and Files… How to use ( Free "Landlord Guidelines and Forms CD" will be distributed at the meeting.) Yard sale The American Sewing Guild Southern Tier Chapter will hold a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Hammondsport Fire Department. At conclusion of the yard sale a cut and sew program will be held to benefit the American Cancer Society. Machines will be provided. This program is from 12:30-4 p.m. Refreshments will be available by the Hammondsport Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. Vendors are needed to sell sewing and craft related items. 8' tables are $10 for ASG members and $20 for non-ASG members. Donations of fabric, patterns, books, etc. will be accepted. Are all welcome. German Sauerkraut Supper St. Thomas Episcopal Church of Bath will hold their 24th Annual Old Fashioned German Sauerkraut Supper from 5- 6 p.m. Feb. 10 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Bath. Take-out will be available and tickets prices are $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12. Tickets are available at the door. Drinks will be included with the dinners. Historical Society lecture The Steuben County Historical Society will sponsor the second lecture in its 2007 series at 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2 at the Empire Room of the Dormann Library, West Morris St., Bath. Lecture is open to c the public. Kirk House, historian and former director of the Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, will speak on the topic, "Steam Boats on Keuka Lake." Internet Safety program Bath Central School District Staff, along with representatives of local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, will present an Internet Safety program from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Jan. 30 in the Haverling High School auditorium. This free seminar is pen to parents and community members in Bath and surrounding communities. Avoca Free Library meeting The Avoca Free Library will hold their quarterly and annual meeting at 2 p.m. Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. The meeting is open to the public. Documentary film St. Thomas' Episcopal Church will host a free showing of the documentary film An Inconvenient Truth on Mondays, Jan. 22 and Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at the St. Thomas' Episcopal Church, 122 Liberty Street, Bath. The film is 95 minutes long and was created by Al Gore and gives the audience an introduction to global warming. No formal discussion is planned. The building is handicapaccessible. Southern Tier Library meeting Southern Tier Library System Board of Trustees will meet at 2 p.m. Jan. 23 at the Dormann Library, 101 West Morris Street, Bath. Disabled American Veterans meetings Disabled American Veterans, Kimble Kowalski Chapter 7 will hold it's Jan. monthly meeting on Jan. 22 and it's Feb. meeting on Feb. 5 at the Bath VA Medical Center in the 3rd Floor Conference Room. New members are welcome and current members are encouraged. H-port American Legion meetings The Hammondsport American Legion Auxiliary Unit 0407 will meet at 2 p.m. of the first Sunday every month at The Hammondsport American Legion, Rt. 54. Hurricane Katrina speach On Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m., Pastor Bruce Davenport from St. John #5 Faith Church in New Orleans will speak about the present situation in that city just one and a half years after the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Pastor Davenport will give his talk at the PeaceWeaver Retreat Sanctuary on Crouse Road in Bath. He will give a grassroots perspective on the storm and its aftermath. He will share stories and take questions about the reality the citizens of New Orleans have faced and are facing now. Bingo Bingo will be held Feb. 1 at 12 noon at the United Methodist Church dinning room, 9 Porter St. Prattsburgh. Vistors welcome ( Prattsburgh senior age 55 and older). Ten flowering trees Ten free flowering trees will be given to each person from New York who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during the month of Jan. The ten trees consist of two Whit Flowering Dogwoods, two Flowering Crabapples, two Washinton Hawthorns, two American Redbuds, and two Goldenraintrees. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between Feb. 1 and May 31 with enclosed planting instructions. The six to 12 inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Members receive a subscription to the Foundation's bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and The Tree Book with information about tree planting care.
