AVOCA - They may have been different games, but the Avoca boys and girls basketball teams used the same strategy to win - defense.
The Avoca boys defeated Bradford 63-19 in a Steuben County Athletic Association round-robin game, while the Avoca girls were victorious over the Bradford, 39-16.
"Our defense sets up everything we do," Avoca girls' coach Tom Johnson said. "It doesn't matter whether it's zone, whether it 's man, whether we press, we key off our defense."
The Tigers held Bradford to no points until Rebekah Webber hit a bucket with 40 seconds left in the first quarter.
"We're working on team defense," Johnson said. "Individually, we play pretty good defense. What we've got to get better at is team defense and helping out and seeing things away from the ball."
In the second game of the doubleheader, Avoca led 10-1 after the first quarter and held a 27-4 advantage at the half.
The Tigers had just two points after four minutes, but scored eight over the last half of the first quarter. Avoca rattled off a 10-0 run over the last 5:47 of the first half and held the Braves to just two points in the same span.
"Once we got going a little bit and our defense picked up and we started to force those turn overs that's when things picked up offensively," Ripple said. "When we started out, we missed some layups, but once we relaxed and got comfortable, we started hitting."
The Tigers held a 26-9 advantage over Bradford in the second and third quarters.
Caitlin Parks netted eight point s, pulled down 12 rebounds, had eight steals and dished out three assists to lead Avoca.
Alicia McFarland poured in a team-high 11 points for the Tigers, while Chelsea Dykes had eight to lead the Braves.
Greg Watson led Avoca with 15 points, all of which came in the fourth quarter. Brian Kidder added nine points, while Joe Wallace, Adam Crooks and Tony Galvan all contributed eight. Aaron Bailey led Bradford with eight points.
