Hammondsports Happenings

+ Yesterday and today, March 3 and 4, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum is having its Civil War Encampment and Week- End Exhibit.

+ It is March, 2007, and at Ira Davenport Memorial Hospital on the Bath- Hammondsport Road, Daffodils Days will be going on just a bit longer so make haste and get up there to purchase these lovely spring flowers. They are a symbol of the hope we all share for a future without cancer. All money collected from their sale goes to ground breaking cancer research.

Also, at Ira D.M.H. the ever-popular book sale is coming up this March. More information on when, where and why is coming up soon. Monies from this endeavor go to the Keuka Health Care Foundation and Auxiliary, did you know that?

+ Tuesday, March 6, the Hammondsport Chapter of the American Association of University Women, Ms. Peg Inglis, president, is having a meeting at the Steuben County Health Care Facility. Program Chair is Alise Irwin; Dinner chair is Mary Paddock. The meeting begins following a 5:30 p.m. social and a 6 p.m. dinner.

+ At Hammondsport Central School, special activities started March 1when there was an Elementary Advisory Committee held a 3:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. meeting. On Friday and Saturday March 2, 3, All-County selected participants in 6th grade chorus, Junior Band, and Senior Chorus did so at Haverling Central School, Bath. Tomorrow, March 5th, there will be a Parent- Teacher 6:30 p.m. gathering in the high school cafeteria. March 6 and 7 3rd and 4th Grade Grade NYS Math Exams will be going on, March 8, 4th and 5th grade Math Exams; and on March 9, 5th Grade NYS Math Exams; Progress Reports also go home on Friday; and there is Early Dismissal! In an update from the Guidance Department, in the February Laker Lines, ACT Test Registration opens March 9, going on until the l4th of April. Test Sight is Hammondsport High School.

+ The last of the Steuben County Historical Society's Winter Lecture Series was held on Friday, March 2, at the Empire Room in the Dormann Library, Bath, at 4 p.m. The series began Jan. 5, when Jerry and Virginia Wright presented a talk and slide show about Steuben County disasters. On Feb. 2, Kirk House told about the old Keuka Streamers.

+ The Spring Membership Meeting of the Society was held at the Painted Post Presbyterian Church yesterday, the 3rd. Following the luncheon Speaker of the Day, Hammondsport's Richard Hamilton told about "Life On An Early New York State Farm."

+ Thursday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m., t h e Hammondsport Woman's Club meets at the home of Barbara Heytmeijer with the following women assisting her in hostessing: Mrs.Eleanor Domas, Janet Hallahan and Mrs.Jayne Honeyman. It will be the annual Business meeting. Church news:

+ The Ecumenical Noon Lenten Service for March 7 is at the United Methodist Church.

+ St. Gabriel's Catholic Church: The parish office opened March 3 following being closed for Presidents Day and through March 2, a vacation break for our secretary/ bookkeeper. Congratulations go to the following children who celebrated the sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Feb. l7: Ashlyn Amsden, Sam Brown, Cameron Drain, Emily Eckel, Troy Fitzwater, Cla ire and James Kolodziejcak, Nathan Shippee.

Today, March 4 The Small Christian Community is s t u d y i i n g t h e book,"Sadhana, a Way to God: Christian Exercises in Eastern Form, The Rev.Anthony De Mello. Spirtual Exercises written by a Jesuit priest famous for his facility with Western and Eastern forms of meditation. This is being led by Laura Opelt.

Congratulations also go to the Children's Liturgy members who took part in the ll a.m. Mass last Sunday: Ruby Williams, cantor, Gabriel Barone, Victoria Yhan and Catherine Lyle, lectors; Chris Coons and Samantha and Matthew Lyle, offertory procession, and Leandra Morris, Communion Minister.

+ St. James Episcopal Church: We are most happy to report that 249 pairs of socks were taken to the VA the week before Christmas. We did go ahead of the amount we gave in 2005 which was 237. The socks were delivered there by Rev. Sandra and John Rogerson. Better reported late than never, eh?

The churchpeople will be meeting this spring with the architect to form plans for the Undercroft. We want your ideas, so please give them to the Rector asap.

+ First Presbyterian Church: Some exerts from business done at the 2006 annual meeting Feb. 4: Following the Call to Order and the Opening Prayer, there was a Declaration of a Quorum present and the reading of the minutes of the 2006 annual meeting. Reports were heard from the Pastor, Session, Personnel, Worship, Evangelism and Church Growth, S t e wardship, Christian Education, Finance, Building and Grounds, and Hunger Committees. Reportss from the Choir, Deacons, Deacons/Memorial Fun, Nominating Committe Report, Auditing Committee, Financial Secretarys and Treasures Report and a 2007 Budget. Any member not getting a report, please contact the church to get one.
