SPCA donations

The Finger Lakes SPCA is requesting area residents to continue donating returnable cans and bottles to the shelter on State Route 54. The recyclable materials are a significant source of income for the SPCA.

Volunteers also are needed to assist in the delivery of returnable materials to recycling centers and in walking dogs and cleaning facilities. For further information, call 776-3039.

GST Boces course catalog

The winter/spring course catalog for GST Boces Adult Education and Training programs is now available. The catalog contains descriptions of the more than 265 courses offered, including career training, online and leisure courses and trips.

Communication problems?

The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Services are confidential and a neutral person is available to help individuals.

H-port American Legion meetings

The Hammondsport American Legion Auxiliary Unit 0407 will meet at 2 p.m. of the first Sunday every month at The Hammondsport American Legion, Rt. 54.

West End Gallery exhibits

The West End Gallery Artists will hold a "Little Gems - A collection of miniature paintings" on the first floor and "Director's Choice" on the second floor from Feb. 9 to March 16 at The West End Gallery, 12 W. Market St., Corning. For more information call 936-2011.

Village of Bath Housing Authority Board

The Village of Bath Housing Authority Board will meet at 4 p.m. the forth Monday of every month (except where a Holiday occures, then it will be held the week before.) The next meeting will be held on March 26.

Dormann Library Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees of the Dormann Library will hold their next monthly meeting at 5 p.m. March 12 in the Empire Room of the Library Building at 101 West Morris Street. Bath.

Prattsburgh Pre-Kindergarten program

Children in the Prattsburgh School District who will be four years old by Dec. 1, 2007 may be eligible for the Pre-Kindergarten program at Prattsburgh Central School.

EMT classes

Rural Health Community Systems, Inc. will offer Level II Emergency Medical Service classes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 24 at the Bath Ambulance Garage, 110 E. Steuben Street. Bath. The course - Advanced Management Skills - is offered through the professional instructors at JET, Inc. Tuition is free for registered Steuben County EMS providers. Can and bottle drive

The ACS Post Prom Committee of Avoca Central School will hold a can and bottle drive from 8 a.m. to noon March 24 at the drop off at the Avoca Central School Cafeteria. This event is a fundraiser to offset the cost of putting on the post prom party.

Harlem Wizards vs. Rowdy Rams

Harlem Wizards vs. Rowdy Rams will be held at 1 p.m. March 18 at the Haverling Athletic Complex. The event is presented by the Haverling Rams Sports Club. Tickets are $10 per person in advance and $12 at the door. Making End$ Meet Workshop

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County Consumer and Financial Management Education Program is offering a Making End$ Meet Workshop from 10:00-Noon and Exploring Credit/Debt Issues Workshop from 1:00- 3:00 p.m. on Monday, March 12, in Conference Room F1, at the Steuben County Office Building, Bath.

Kindergarten info. meeting

Parents of all in-coming kindergarten students are encouraged to attend an informational meeting on March 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Vernon E. Wightman Primary School cafeteria.

Kindergarten registration packets will be available that evening.

Children who will be fiveyears old on or before December 1, 2007 are eligible to start school in the 2007-08 school year.

If your child will be eligible to enter kindergarten in September, please call the school at 776-4123 ext. 5110 to ensure that your child's name and address are on the eligibility list.

Opera comes to town

Third-graders from Vernon E. Wightman Primary School and Tri-Cities Opera Co. will present The Toy Shop, a contemporary children's opera by Seymour Barab, on March 13 at 7 p.m. in the Haverling High School auditorium. The production is free to the public.

Haverling musical

The Haverling Class of 2007 will present Carousel March 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. in the High School auditorium. Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens and $5 for students, and are available from any cast member, in the High School office.

Free trip for 11th grade student

Steuben Rural Electric Cooperative, Inc. is looking for an 11th grade student to sponsor for the National Rural Electric Cooperative Legislative Conference in May 2007. The student will travel to Washington DC for free.

To be eligible the student must reside in a home served by Steuben REC, Inc.

Cancer kickball tournament

The 4th annual Billy Apenowich Memorial Kick Cancer Kickball Tournament will be held Sunday, June 3 at the Bath soccer complex. This is a fun filled all day event. Teams consist of 8-12 players, half adults and half under the age of 14.

"Just Desserts"

Corner Traveling Players will present "Just Desserts," an audience participation mystery at 7:30 p.m. March 31 and 2 p.m. April 1 at The Old National Hotel, 13 E. Steuben St., Bath. Desserts, tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be served at intermission and a cash bar will be available. Tickets are $25 for couples and $15 for singles. Tickets will be on sale at Longwell Lumber Co., or call 664-1207, 776-4313 or 776- 5114. This event is to benefit the 'Save-The-Lyon' commission.

Spring story programs

The Dormann Library will begin its Spring story programs starting March 19. New this year will be a program for children under three and their parent/ caregiver. This program is held on Mondays from 10:30-11:00 a.m. The dates will be March 19-June 11. Songs, rhymes, and simple stories will be presented.

The preschool story hour is for ages three-five. This program will be on Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The dates will be March 21-June 13. Each week has a special theme with stories, songs, games, and a craft.

Pesticide program

Cornell Cooperative Extension and the state Department of Environmental Conservation will host a pesticide applicator training program from 10 a.m. to noon March 20 at the DEC Office, 7291 Coon Road, Bath.

The Pesticide Applicator Exam will be given at 1 p.m. This training session is for those taking the exam for the first time, or those who have let their permit lapse and need to re-take the test. The exam fee is $50 - make checks payable to NYS-DEC. Study manuals are available from CCE - call ahead to make sure we have the one you need.

Participants should purchase study manuals early so they have time to prepare for the test. For more information and to register call Chris Wainwright, NYS-DEC at 776-2165, ext. 23.

Avoca Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for the 2007-2008 school year will be held at the Avoca Central School on the following dates:

+ From Noon to 6 p.m. April 23.

+ From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 24.

To register, parents will need to show a birth certificate proving that their child will be at least five years old by Dec. 1, 2007 and a current immunization record. Immunizations are required for public school attendance before entering.

Phone calls will be accepted for appointments on April 3 and 4 between the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. only. Call Mrs. Weldy in the Elementary Office at 566- 2221 x-122.

Savona Free Library meeting

The Savona Free Library Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. March 12 in the library.

World War I Exhibit

World War I Exhibit is on display until April 8, at The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum of early aviation and local history. World War I uniforms, weapons, and other artifacts pertaining to America's participation in the "Great War" will be on display. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Curtiss Museum is located at 8419 State Route 54, Hammondsport. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors 65 and older, and $4 for students 7-18. Children six and under are free.

Energy on the farm

The American Corn Growers Association, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Farm Aid, the Finger Lakes RC&D Council, and the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council will host "Growing Energy on the Farm" from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 16 at the Civil Defense Center, Route 54N in Bath.

Topics will include the 2007 Farm Bill, growing warm-season grasses, grass pelleting and wide swathing to speed forage drying and biodiesel.

This meeting is for area farmers, entrepreneurs and individuals who are interested in growing and using perennial grasses for direct combustion, learning more about biodiesel, and who would like to know more about the growing renewable energy industry in WNY. Pizza and beverages will be provided courtesy of the American Corn Growers Association. Reservations are greatly appreciated as seated is limited.

Book and bake sale

The annual March book and bake sale, sponsored by The Friends of the Dormann Library, will be held in the Community Room of the Dormann Library, Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All books will be half the usual book sale price. Members of the Friends of the Library will have a 9 a.m. admission to preview the books and baked goods. All proceeds go to the support of the library: books, programs, and items needed by the library and staff. New members of the Friends are alway s w e l - come. Information is available at the library.

Committee meeting

Single Adult Fellowship dance

Single Adult Fellowship will present a dance at 7:30 p.m. March 17 featuring live music by Country Fever at the First Presbyterian Methodist Church, Painted Post. The dance is open to all divorced, widowed, separated or never married individuals. Must be 21 years of age.

St. Patrick's Day party

The Prattsburgh Public Library will host a St. Patrick's Day party from noon to 2 p.m. March 17. All are welcome.

Third-grade opera

Enjoy the Toy Shop, a contemporary children's opera performed by VEW third-graders and members of Tri-Cities Opera Co. in Binghamton. The free program will be held at 7 p.m. March 13 in the Haverling High School Auditorium.

High School musical

Recruitment fair

The Arc of Steuben will hold a recruitment fair for prospective employees on Tuesday, March 20 at its administrative offices in Bath.

Various departments within the human service agency are seeking candidates for direct care and other positions. Department representatives will be available to talk about specific job openings, benefits and other pertinent issues.
