HAMMONDSPORT HAPPENINGS

+ Yesterday, Saturday, March 31 was a very busy day in Hammondsport. There was the annual Polar Bear Plunge in the cold waters of Lake Keuka, at Switzerland Inn on the East Lake Road,br.br.br., and the annual Easter Egg Hunt on the Village Square, plus the beginning of the Murder Mystery Tour, a Keuka Lake Wine Trail Event taking in eight different Wineries. It continues again today, April l.

+ Remember the much appreciated exhibit of WWI Uniforms, weapons and other artifacts from that

war to end all wars, closes Easter Sunday, April 8, 2007.

+ April's Thursday Nighters meet April 5, 5:30 p.m. at the Main Street School for dinner and a program. Bring a dish to share and your table service. Following the meal, speaker Nancy Reigelesburger is presenting a talk on Identity Theft, a real menace in the world of today. Lucille Walbridge and Martha Treicler are hostessing.

+ High School students at Hammondsport and Haverling (Bath) who are graduating from high school this year of 2007 have the great opportunity to win a Helen Rubar Memorial Peace Scholarship, sponsored by The Bath Peace and Justice Group and the Peaceweavers. Up to $1000 will be awarded to one student or a shared award between two or more students. Thus, graduating young men and women at the two schools in good academic condition are urged to get an application form from their high school guidance office. They must also have two letters from a teacher and a community member recommended them. The Selection Commmittee of the two schools will be interviewing applicants also.

And, another organization, The Bath Branch of the American Association of University Women, is offering two scholarships for 2007. The High School Award is open to a young woman of 2007 graduating classes in six naighoring schools: Avoca Central, Hammondsport Central, Haverling Central, Prattsburg Central, or

Wayland-Cohocton Central. Appy for this award at your schools Guidance Office.

The groups other award is for mature women who have had their schooling interrupted, or plan to return to the work force. Applications for this award are available by Carol Olszewski, Bath. The high schooler winner will get $750; the Mature Woman winner, $750. Last day for turning in an application is Monday, April l6.

Section 3635 of the Education Law requires notification of parents or guardians of requests for private/parochi a l sc hool transportation services prior to April lst of each school year for the following year. Request forms have been available at the Main Street School Bus Garage. + For several months, Roswell-McDaniels American Legion Auxiliary has been meeting at 2 p.m. the first Sunday of each month at The Hammondsport Amerian Legion, RT. 54.

Church news:

Ecumenical First Friday would be held this month on Good Friday, April 6. If interested, please contact your church to find out if it has been canceled for April because of that fact. Today, April l, is Palm Sunday in all the village area churches.

+ St. Gabriel's Catholic Church: Small Christian Community April l. Lenten program is right after Sunday's ll a.m. Mass.The last lesson: Sustaining Heart in the Heartland, E x p l o r i n g R u r a l Spirituality: Miriam Brown. The many facets of rural spirtuality, led by Dan Williams. Any parent wanting to prepare your child for First Communion, taking place May 6, should contact the parish office; the sacrament is readiness based, not tied to a certain age or grade but should be celebrated after a child has been prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Have you ever seen the first two Episcopal churches in Hammondsport? (Go to About.) Remember, if it is your turn to be a reader, usher, or acolyte, go to Caslenar/Lay Ministers Schedule. Look up the readings ahead of time at the Lectionary link. The annual Vestry Retreat took place on March 10th. Book Study of the week takes place on Mondays at Rev Sandy's,10 Shethar Street; 7 p.m. At 7:30 p.m. on Mondays is an Al-Anon Meeting. Tuesdays at 3 p.m. and Saturdays at ll a.m. the church undercroft is open for the Food Pantry. On Tuesday evening Bible Study is at the Curtis's, l0 Sheather. Each Thursday at l2:l5 a.m., is Holy Eucharist in the church on the corner of Lake and Main Street.

Lake and breakfast following at the United Methodist Church: Like to sing? The church choir is always open to new members. Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in the church.
