YOUR COMMUNITY The Steuben Co. Sheriff's Department, along with the Finger Lakes Boating Museum, will offer the NYS Safe Boating course from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 14 and April 21 at the Glenn Curtiss Museum, St. Rt. 54, Hammondsport. Attendance for both classes is mandatory. There is no charge for people taking the course, however a $5 donation to the Glenn Curtiss Museum, for the use of their facilities, is requested. The Boating Safety course is intended for all young boat operators between the ages of 10 and 18 who wish to operate a motor boat, and is the mandatory course required for everyone, regardless of age, who wish to operate a personal watercraft, wave-runner and jetski's. Those who successfully complete the course will be issued a NYS Safe Boating certificate. For those interested in taking the course are asked to call the Steuben Co. Sheriff's Office at 1-800-724- 7777 to pre register for the course. Class size is limited. 2events include: free blood pressure check, food stamp eligibility prescreen, free book with new Library card, building tours and refreshments, compliments of Wegmans. Children events include: face painting, crafts, bean bag game, balloons and snacks. KLP launches Annual Membership Drive Keuka Lake Players has revamped their membership benefits for the 2007 season. Members joining KLP at the basic level will get the monthly E-newsletter, an invitation to the Annual Dinner, discounts on tickets for the three show season, preferred seating and free admission to in-house theater craft workshops. Dues are $10 for basic individual or $25 for basic family membership which includes all immediate family members. Keuka Lake Players is a community based voluntary organization, dedicated to preserving, encouraging and teaching live theater in West Central New York by providing opportunities for the public to see learn about and take part in live theater. Students interested in the arts are encouraged with KLP granted scholarships. The organization also contributes to local community projects with talents and funding. Avoca Kindergarten Registration Kindergarten registration for the 2007-2008 school year will be held at the Avoca Central School on the following dates: + From Noon to 6 p.m. April 23. + From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 24. To register, parents will need to show a birth certificate proving that their child will be at least five years old by Dec. 1, 2007 and a current immunization record. Immunizations are required for public school attendance before entering. Phone calls will be accepted for appointments on April 3 and 4 between the hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. only. Call Mrs. Weldy in the Elementary Office at 566- 2221 x-122. Spring story programs The Dormann Library will begin its Spring story programs started March 19. New this year will be a program for children under three and their parent/ caregiver. This program is held on Mondays from 10:30-11:00 a.m. The dates will be March 19-June 11. Songs, rhymes, and simple stories will be presented. The preschool story hour is for ages three-five. This program will be on Wednesdays from 10:30- 11:30 a.m. The dates will be March 21-June 13. Mother's Day Smorgasbord St. James Episcopal Church in Hammondsport will hold their annual Mother's Day Smorgasbord Supper from 4-6:30 p.m. May 5. The cost is as follows: $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-12 and free for children 3 years of age and younger. Take outs will be available. The menu will include roast beef, ham, chicken, and meatloaf with a variety of casseroles, fruit and assorted salads, vegetables, assorted breads, dessert and beverages. A complimentary glass of wine will be available for those that are 21 years of age and older. The event will be chaired by Nancy French. Holy Services The First Presbyterian Church on the Square in downtown Bath announces the following Holy Week Services: + At 8:30 a.m. April 8 (Easter Sunday) will be Contemporary Worship, live music. Also on April 8 at 11 a.m. is Traditional Worship, Senior Choir and special music. The location is handicap accessible anad coffee hour will be held at both services. Rev. Rediscover Your Musical Heritage Join the North Baptist Church for a Sacred Harp singing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 21 at North Baptist Church, 127 Sly Avenue, Corning. The Sacred Harp is a shaped-note hymn book containing early American Sacred music, including hymns, anthems, fuguing tunes and camp meeting songs. The music is sung in a vigorous four part a cappella harmony. Admission is free and all singers are welcome. Flower arranging class Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County is getting back to basics by offering public classes in a number of educational areas. The first session, from their agriculture/ horticulture department, Flower Arranging, will be offered at 6 p.m. April 16 at the Cooperative Extension Learning Center in Bath. The class will be led by Tom Cortright, owner of Flowers by Cortright in Corning. He will guide the participants to each build a rounded centerpiece that can be adapted into several various designs. While the class creates their arrangements, Cortright will provide plenty of background information such as where flowers tend to come from and the price of producing the flowers. Cost of the class is $15 per person. All materials will be provided. Participants should bring their own pruning shears. Wine Country Toastmasters Wine Country Toastmasters will meet the first and third Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. at the County Health Care Facility, Co. Rte. 113, Bath. Road closing This Tuesday, April 10, the Bath Volunteer Fire Department Inc. will be installing a new water line across East Morris St. in the Village of Bath. The road will be closed to traffic between Wilson Ave. and Halsey St. for the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Local residents will have access to their driveways. The Volunteer Fire Department apologizes for the disruption of the area. There will also be restricted access on Monday, April 9 while they make the cuts in the blacktop. Radical Reptiles The Tanglewood staff will present Radical Reptiles at 10:30 a.m. April 21 at Mossy Bank Nature Center. The event is presented by the Tanglewood staff. Bring the family to learn about and enjoy the reptiles. Employment Fair Persons interested in full or part time employment with the county's leading human service organization are invited to an employment fair at 5 p.m. April 17 at the Hornell State Office Building. The Arc of Steuben is recruiting candidates for positions in a number of different departments, including direct support. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors 65 and older and $4 for students 7- 18. Children under six are free. Group rates sare 10 or more are available.
