another war overseas, we should be glad our men and women injured soldiers from so many wars who have been injured had all through the years since the Civil War, and, just remember

how many wars we've had, had such a wonderful place to return to. The Bath VA Medical Center began as a New York State Soldier and Sailors Home during that war Cival War between the states. An appeal in the

l870's to The Grand Army of the Republic brought in the first money to have on

hand to

build

such a medical place. The first corner stone was layed in June of 1877. History tells' us that very soon after the building was built, traffic was like a big city. Well over l9,000 visitors came to visit their wounded soldier relatives. The Civil War Veterans were visited by many noted Americans. One of them was the Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe. After the big opening in l879, history tells us that between l878 and l929, the home serviced wounded combat veterans of NYS. This place was turned over to the Federal Government in May of l929 and one year later became part of the Veterans Administration. More later.
