Why volunteers matter Imagine looking at the help wanted ads and seeing a listing that read "adult to work in a classroom. Duties include but are not limited to reading to children, picking up after children, working with children, etc... Starting pay $0. Pay after six months: $0." You get the point. Believe it or not, many people respond to this "job listing," and those people are called volunteers. Hammondsport Central School has been blessed with a very generous community; both in the amount of scholarships for students as well as the number of people who choose to work with our children... for free. There really is no way to adequately thank our volunteers, and most volunteers do not want any recognition for their efforts. To all of our volunteers in our schools and those other volunteers (fire fighters, ambulance, scouts, little league, etc...) who affect the lives of children please accept my personal and public gratitude for all of your efforts. It is my sincerest hope that by continuing to work together we will continue to foster the true meaning of the word community. Christopher R. Brown, Hammondsport The writer is superintendent of the Hammondsprt school district |
