Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary of Unit 173 meets every second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles Wescott Post on William Streeet in Bath.

SPCA donations

The Finger Lakes SPCA is requesting area residents to continue donating returnable cans and bottles to the shelter on State Route 54. The recyclable materials are a significant source of income for the SPCA.

Volunteers also are needed to assist in the delivery of returnable materials to recycling centers and in walking dogs and cleaning facilities. For further information, call 776-3039. Communication problems?

The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Services are confidential and a neutral person is available to help individuals.

The 4th annual Billy Apenowich Memorial Kick Cancer Kickball Tournament will be held Sunday, June 3 at the Bath soccer complex. This is a fun filled all day event. Teams consist of 8-12 players, half adults and half under the age of 14.

Victims of Domestic Violence Women's Support Group will meet from 6-7 p.m. Thursday evenings. For more information call 1-800- 286-3407. The next meeting will be held on April 26.

Senior trips

A Bath Village/Town senior trip will be held on May 16 Belhurst Castle Fun Day. Sign ups will be held Monday, April 30 at 1 p.m. in the Board Room of the Village of Bath Municipal Building, 110 Liberty St., Bath. P-burgh Senior Citizens Club

The Prattsburgh Senior Citizens Club will meet at 6 p.m. the first and third Thursday of every month through Nov. 2007 in the Prattsburgh Methodist Church dining room, 4 Porter St. The meeting are open to all Prattsburgh seniors, ages 55 and over. Bring a dish to pass and your own table servie, enjoy the social time, special events, get to know your neighbors, meet new friends and reconnect with old friends. Keuka Lake Players has revamped their membership benefits for the 2007 season. Members joining KLP at the basic level will get the monthly E-newsletter, an invitation to the Annual Dinner, discounts on tickets for the three show season, preferred seating and free admission to in-house theater craft workshops. Dues are $10 for basic individual or $25 for basic family membership which includes all immediate family members.

Keuka Lake Players is a community based voluntary organization, dedicated to preserving, encouraging and teaching live theater in West Central New York by providing opportunities for the public to see learn about and take part in live theater. Students interested in the arts are encouraged with KLP granted scholarships. The organization also contributes to local community projects with talents and funding.

St. James Episcopal Church in Hammondsport will hold their annual Mother's Day Smorgasbord Supper from 4-6:30 p.m. May 5. The cost is as follows: $7 for adults, $3 for children ages 3-12 and free for children 3 years of age and younger. Take outs will be available. The menu will include roast beef, ham, chicken, and meatloaf with a variety of casseroles, fruit and assorted salads, vegetables, assorted breads, dessert and beverages. A complimentary glass of wine will be available for those that are 21 years of age and older. The event will be chaired by Nancy French.

Ten free shade trees

Ten free shade trees will be given to each person who joins The National Arbor Day Foundation during April 2007 as part of the nonprofit Foundation's Trees for America campaign. National Arbor Day is the last Friday in April, April 27.

The ten shade trees are Red Oak, Sugar Maple, Weeping Willow, Green Ash, Thornless Honeylocust, Pin Oak, River Birch, Tuliptree, Silver Maple and Red Maple.

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting in April or May with enclosed planting instructions. The six to twelve inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

To become a member of the Foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Shade Trees, National Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Aavenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by April 30, 2007 or go online to www.arborday.org. Wine Country Toastmasters

Wine Country Toastmasters will meet the first and third Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. at the County Health Care Facility, Co. Rte. 113, Bath. The meeting will discuss enhancing communication and leadership skills.

Northeast Elite

The Northeast Elite, a competitive cheerleading and dance group, is now accepting new members for their third season for all ages. Tiny cheer for ages five and under, minnie cheer for ages eight and under, youth cheer/hip hop dance team for ages 11 and under, junior cheer/hip hop dance team for ages 14 and under, two senior cheer teams/hip hop dance team for ages 18 and under and collegiate open team for ages 18 and up.

Register by May 9, team placements will be held May 11 and 12.

"To Have and to Hold," an exhibit of classic wedding gowns of yesteryear, presented by Lorraine Loomis- Konig, will be on display until June 17 at The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, 8419 State Route 54, Hammondsport. The museum is open daily from 10-4 until April 30. Beginning May 1, the museum will be open 9-5, Mon.-Sat., and 10-5 on Sunday. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors 65 and older and $4 for students 7- 18. Children under six are free. Group rates sare 10 or more are available.

Orientation and registration for the Prattsburgh Central School kindergarten will be held at 7 p.m. May 2 in the school cafetorium. The program offers important info. for parents of children entering kindergarten. Parents of eligible children are encouraged to attend. Childcare will be available for children who are at least three years old.

Any child in Prattsburgh School District who will be five years old by Dec. 1, 2007 is eligible to register for Sept. kindergarten program.

The Jack Lisi Youth Award winners have been selected and will be honored at the 16 Annual Jack Lisi Youth Award Banquet at 6:30 p.m. May 4 at the Hornell Knights of Colombus.

The Avoca Free Library will hold their quarterly meeting at 2 p.m. April 29 at the library, 18 N. Main St., Avoca. The public is welcome to attend. Bird walk and breakfast

Dr. Randy Weidner will present the bird walk and breakfast event at 7 a.m. May 12 at Mossy Bank Nature Center. Bring your binoculars and wear hiking shoes. Breakfast will be served after the walk. Spring story programs

The Dormann Library will hold a program for children under three and their parent/ caregiver. The program is held on Mondays from 10:30-11:00 a.m. until June 11. Songs, rhymes, and simple stories will be presented.

The preschool story hour is for ages three-five. The program will be on Wednesdays from 10:30- 11:30 a.m.until June 13. Each week has a special theme with stories, songs, games, and a craft.

Penny Social

A Penny Social will be held at 12 p.m. May 5 at the American Legion in Avoca. Drawings will start at 1 p.m. A 50/50 drawing, door prize and raffle baskets will be available. Also, available will be refreshments; hot dogs, lemonade, tea and coffee for $0.50 each.

Donations of items accepted for the Penny Social will benefit Alice's Rest Comfort Home. Call to arrange for a drop off at 566-3420.

Earth Day

Corning Community College will host several Earth Day related events until April 30. The events will begin with an Earth Day celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23 in the Triangle Loundge, Commons Building. The event will feature environmentally friendly organizations located in the Southern Tier including Greensprings Natural Cemetery Preserve, Finger Lakes Native Plant Society, Muddy Fingers Farm, Spence Crest Nature Center, Cornell University Lab of Ornithology, Audubon Society, Wild At Heart and several CCCC participants including Phi Theta Kappa, Green Campus Task Force and the Earth Spirit Society. Live music will be provided by local musician and environmentalist, John Hazard.

C-S UPK Info. night

There will be an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 3 in the Savona Elementary cafeteria for all parents of children who will be four years of age on or before Dec. 1, 2007. The purpose of the presentation is to give an overview of the UPK program, explain about the selections process, eligibility requirements, and sigh-up for an application appointment. Tyrtle Beach Youth Fund deadline

The Tyrtle Beach Youth Fund Application deadline is May 1. Applicantions must be received or postmarked by that date to be considered for receiving funds. Qualifying youth programs must operate within the municipals of Bath, Hammondsport, Avoca, Savona, Prattsburgh and Campbell serving young people up to 18 years of ae. The youth groups must be non-discriminatory and funding is for program use only. Maximum amount per organization is $500.

MS Walk

Walkers, volunteers and friends will join together for the MS Walk at East High School, Corning, May 6. The National MS Society invites the community to attend the walk to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis.

The Finger Lakes Parent Network, Inc. has officially declared the month of May as, "Children's Mental Health Awareness Month" and May 6-12 has been named as "Children's Mental Health Awareness Week."

To celebrate the goals of the month of May, Finger Lakes Parent Network, Inc. has scheduled several activities in the Steuben County area. People are encouraged to wear green ribbons to symbolize their dedication to children's mental health.

The FLPN, Inc. Family Consultant for Steuben County, Sue Hunter, will be aavailable to meet with the public at various locations around the county in the first week of May. The month-long campaign is as follows:

+ From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 30 at the Dormann Library.

+ From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 2 at the Corning Resource Center.

+ From 5-7 p.m. May 3 at the Corning Library.

The Board of Education of the Bath Central School District will hold a Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. May 2 in the District Office. Following the Regular Meeting the board of education will hold a building workshop. Pburgh Rotary Annual Chicken BBQ

Prattsburgh Rotary Annual Chicken Barbecue will be held at 4:30 p.m.- till food is gone, May 25 at the new Fire Hall, Allis St. Take outs will be available. The Office for the Aging is sponsoring an educational meeting held at 6:30 p.m. April 30 at the Hornell Sr. Center. Refreshments will be served.

The meeting will address long-term care insurance through the Education an Outreach Program (LTCIEOP) to discuss insurance as an option in financial planning for longterm care needs.

The session is open to the public and aimed for people of those 40 years of age and older.
