Triple play gives C-S baseball team the victory over Hammondsport
LEADER STAFF

HAMMONDSPORT - Will Cornett did more than his part offensively, going 3-for- 5 with a double, two RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases Friday, April 27.

So for good measure, Cornett capped the Campbell-Savona baseball team's 13-4 victory over Hammondsport by helping turn a game-ending triple play.

With runners at first and second for Hammondsport and nobody out in the seventh, Cornett fielded a grounder at short, alertly tagged the runner headed to third, flipped the ball to second for the force and then watched as the triple play was completed on the throw to first.

"It was unbelievable," Campbell-Savona head coach Kurt York said of the triple play. York noted it was just the second triple play he's seen in 26 years of coaching high school baseball. The only other York witnessed - oddly enough - was when his Campbell team turned a triple play against Savona in 1992, before the two schools merged.

Along with Cornett, Andy Knowles also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Zach Simpson struck out seven, walked five and gave up just one earned run while going the full seven innings to pick up the win and move to 1-0 on the season. Brian McCann picked up an RBI for Hammondsport (2-3).
