Convicted killer still seeks new trial; claims coercion and trickery

BATH - Convicted killer Shawn Campbell appeared briefly Monday, April 30, in Steuben County Court as he continued his quest to have a new trial.

Campbell's attorney, Joseph Valley, told Steuben County Court Judge Joseph Latham he will re-file the motion to vacate Campbell's judgment.

Additionally, Valley said he will file a motion to have Campbell housed closer to Steuben County. He is currently serving his 25-years-to-life sentence at Wende Correctional Facility in Erie County.

Campbell is scheduled to reappear in court May 14.

The 29-year-old Yates County man claims he was coerced and tricked into pleaded guilty to murdering 48-year-old Rhonda Bilby in 2004. Campbell pleaded guilty in October 2005 during his jury trial. Campbell struck Bilby with a wrench outside her Bath home in Sept. 2004. Weeks after pleading guilty, Campbell asked to with draw his plea. Latham eventually denied the motion. Ultimately, Campbell hopes to receive a new trial.
