BATH - The Steuben County Pomona Grange will add something new this year to the 51st annual Steuben County Dairy Festival, scheduled for June 2.
Dubbed the first annual Dairy-Aire Outhouse Race, the event will be held at 2 p.m. at the county fairgrounds, following an inspection of outhouses at 1 p.m.
What is an outhouse race? Four prizewinning categories offer a clue: A trophy and $50 cash award will be presented to the fastest outhouse team; a second trophy will be awarded for the most creative outhouse; a third will go to the outhouse team traveling the longest distance, and a final trophy will honor the most original outhouse and team.
The race will be one of many events showcasing the 2007 Dairy Festival, which kicks off at 8 a.m. with cow pie bingo at the fairgrounds. The Dairy Festival parade, perhaps the largest summer parade in the county, steps off from the fairgrounds at 10:30 a.m. and follows the traditional route through the central village before returning to the fairgrounds.
Additional Saturday events include the antique and classic tractor display (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and another new event, the Dairy Dash Relay Race, on Liberty Street at 9:30 a.m.
The boys and girls bicycle giveaway begins at 1:30 p.m. in front of the grandstand, following a youth pedal tractor pull and more cow pie bingo at 1 p.m.
On Sunday, June 3, the fair's tractor rally kicks off at 8 a.m. following registration at 7 p.m.
