Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary of Unit 173 meets every second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles Wescott Post on William Streeet in Bath.

SPCA donations

The Finger Lakes SPCA is requesting area residents to continue donating returnable cans and bottles to the shelter on State Route 54. The recyclable materials are a significant source of income for the SPCA.

Volunteers also are needed to assist in the delivery of returnable materials to recycling centers and in walking dogs and cleaning facilities. For further information, call 776-3039. Communication problems?

The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Services are confidential and a neutral person is available to help individuals.

The 4th annual Billy Apenowich Memorial Kick Cancer Kickball Tournament will be held Sunday, June 3 at the Bath soccer complex. This is a fun filled all day event. Teams consist of 8-12 players, half adults and half under the age of 14.

"To Have and to Hold," an exhibit of classic wedding gowns of yesteryear, presented by Lorraine Loomis- Konig, will be on display until June 17 at The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum, 8419 State Route 54, Hammondsport. The museum is open daily from 10-4 until April 30. Beginning May 1, the museum will be open 9-5, Mon.-Sat., and 10-5 on Sunday. Kindergarten registration will be held at Vernon E. Wightman Primary School May 7-15. Eligible students in the Bath Central School District must be 5 years old on or before December 1, 2007 to begin school this fall. AARP and the St. James Mercy Health Systen are teaming up to offer the 55 Alive Driving Course for adults ages 50 and over. The two-day course will be held from 1-5 p.m. May 14 and 16 in the hospital's Memorial Conference Room.

Participants who complete the 8-hour classroom refresher course may receive a 10% discount on their auto insurance for three years and points may be taken off their lisence. The cost is $10 and seating is limited.

The Bath Central School District recently mailed a survey to all parents in the community. Parents are asked to fill out the surveys and return them in the postage paid envelope provided by May 18. Bath School misprint

Two misprints were distributed via the District Calendar and the District Newsletter. Please be aware that May 18 will be a half day for all students for a Staff Development Day.

Campbell Lions Club

The Campbell Lions Club has announced that the "Community Yard Sale Day" in the Town of Campbell will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 19 - rain or shine.

Special events planned are: chicken BBQ by the Campbell Fire Dept. starting at 11 a.m. until Duck Race by the Campbell Lions Club, registration will start at 12 noon by the American Legion bridge with the duck launch at 2 p.m.

The Dormann Library will hold a program for children under three and their parent/ caregiver. The program is held on Mondays from 10:30-11:00 a.m. until June 11. Songs, rhymes, and simple stories will be presented.

The preschool story hour is for ages three-five. The program will be on Wednesdays from 10:30- 11:30 a.m.until June 13. Each week has a special theme with stories, songs, games, and a craft.

To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007.

Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is no cost to participate.

Yard sale

On Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at the PeaceWeaver Retreat Center at 8125 Crouse Road just outside of Bath, the "High Cost of Low Price" will be shown. This highly acclaimed film, given "Two Thumbs Up" by Ebert & Roeper, shows how the megaretailer Wal-Mart has impacted its employees and the local towns where it builds. The film is free and all are welcome to attend. After the film there will be a discussion of how Wal- Mart will affect Steuben County if its application is approved

The evening's activities are co-sponsored by the Bath, NY Group, a group of citizens organizing in response to Wal-Mart's application to the town of Bath to build a new SuperCenter on Rt 54. This group is promoting dialogue on this issue and is urging local policymakers, proprietors, and citizens to act to preserve our local economy and environment.

Host families

Northwest Services Peace Program is looking for caring families to host high school students (15-18 years old) from various countries for the 2006-07 school year.

All the students are prescreened: they speak English, have medical insurance, and their own spending money.

The St. James Mercy Foundation will hold their 4 th Annual Golf Tournament with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. June 8 at Twin Hickory Golf Club. The event will be held rain or shine. Many great prizes and drawings, including a chance to win a free car courtesy of Maple City Dodge.

A limited number tournament sponsorships and teams are still available. Food and beverages will be provided on the course and a dinner will follow the event in the club house. Payment is due at the time of registration, June 1, 2007.

"Taps"

On May 19 Armed Forces Day, thousands of buglers around the world will play "Taps" at 11 a.m. to honor the memories of U.S. Veterans, past and present and to raise awareness of the need to foster a new generation of "Live Buglers" at military funerals. Join the Bath VA Medical Center, Bath national Cemetery or WoodLawn National Cemetery in Elmira at 11 a.m. for the performance of Echo Taps by volunteer buglers. Additional Highlights at the Bath location include musical performances by Corning Brass Works, 21 gun salute by the Campbell American Legion Color Guard and Honor Guard provided by the Corning VFW. The summer membership meeting of the Steuben County Historical Society will be held on at 12:30 p.m. June 2 at the Avoca Methodist Church, Jacob's Ladder Road, Avoca. Program for the afternoon will feature Roland Bentley speaking on the topic of "One-Room School Houses in Steuben County." He will relate his vivid personal experiences attending a local one-room school and memories of a unique teacher who positively shaped his life.

Free rabies clinic

A free rabies clinic sponsored by the Steuben County Public Health and Nursing Services will be held from 9-11 a.m. May 19 at the Hornell Fire Department, the Corning Fire Department and the Mt. Washington County Barn in Bath. All pets must be restrained. Remember state law mandates that all cats, dogs and ferrets receive rabies vaccinations by four months of age. Please bring proof of prior rabies shots.
