Fire

A May 4 house fire at 5559 Unionville Road destroyed the home of Lawrence and Sally Lawton.

Bath volunteer firefighters found the structure engulfed in flames when they responded to an alarm at 6:11 a.m.

According to fire department reports, Lawrence Lawton and his son were hunting in nearby woods when they heard screaming from the house. They found the rear and kitchen of the house in flames. Sally Lawton was trapped upstairs when the fire broke out and escaped by breaking through a window, climbing onto the porch roof and jumping to the ground. She suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Fire departments from Avoca, Kanona, Cameron and Hammondsport provided mutual aid, with the Bath VA Fire Department on standby for Bath. State police also assisted at the scene.

All units were back in service by 2:45 p.m.
