Gazebo gala
By Andrew McGlothlen

How would you like your own home away from home? Does the thought of a getaway place in your own yard sound appealing? For a little privacy or romance in your own backyard, it is hard to beat a gazebo. These structures act as a separate place from your home and allow you to escape outdoors while enjoying some of the comforts of home.

Gazebos are typically octagonal in shape, but they can be circular, hexagonal or any other polygon for that matter. Something about the octagonal shape, though, seems to say, "Stop and relax here." The octagonal shape of gazebos is very aesthetically pleasing, mixing the unusual with the familiar and creating a more exotic look.

Today, gazebos come in a variety of colors and sizes and usually include some form of overhead lighting and benches or seats. Other options include screening, hot tubs or saunas, making the gazebo multi-functional. Gazebos can also make nice gathering places for family events or quiet spaces for evenings alone.

For most gazebos, you are probably going to have to check with your local zoning department for a building permit. You should take the plans for your gazebo with you to make sure they are approved ahead of time. You may need to contact electricians or plumbers depending on the scope of your project. If you have to dig, make sure you have any underground power lines or pipes marked by your utility companies so you do not inadvertently add to your expenses and inconvenience yourself. Some gazebos come in ready-to-construct kits that only require basic carpentry skills. Many can be built from scratch, and some can even be delivered fully constructed. Depending on your ambition and the personal touches you would like, you can choose from any of these options. Once you have your gazebo placed and installed in your backyard, you may want to consider adding a stepping stone walkway, a sidewalk or a lighted path to it to make it more inviting.

Gazebos, though reminiscent of a bygone era, still have power over our imagination today. Whether you were enchanted by the gazebo in The Sound of Music or love the one in The Gilmore Girls' Stars Hollow, perhaps it is time for you to get your own. Gazebos are becoming progressively more affordable and efficient, making them a viable

option for many homeowners looking to improve their backyard space.
