Students receive scholarship awards

+ Two Steuben County residents have each been awarded scholarships to attend Alfred State College in the fall.

Jennifer Watches of Bath was awarded a $1,000 "Educational Foundation Academic Distinction Scholarship." Watches is slated to graduate in 2007 from Haverling High School and intends to enroll in the undeclared major program.

Justin Hammond of Hornell was awarded a $500 "Alumni Scholarship." Hammond is slated to graduate in 2007 from Hornell High School and intends to enroll in the businessaccounting program.

+ Three students at Hammondsport Central School have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams.

2006 HCS graduates Brian Howard, Luke Mishrell and Stephen Sable qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams, with grades of 3 or higher.

The College Board's Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the more than 1.3 million high school students in 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.

Stephen Sable and Luke Mishrell are currently enrolled at Cornell University where they are studying Biological Sciences and Environmental Engineering respectively. Brian Howard is currently enrolled at Clarkson University where he is studying Mechanical Engineering.
