Improving driver safety

The staff of the Caregiver Resource Center of the Steuben County Office for the Aging can help sort out issues and make suggestions for improving elderly driving safety.

Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary of Unit 173 meets every second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles Wescott Post on William St., Bath.

SPCA donations

The Finger Lakes SPCA is requesting area residents to continue donating returnable cans and bottles to the shelter on St. Rte. 54. The recyclable materials are a significant source of income for the SPCA.

Volunteers also are needed to assist in the delivery of returnable materials to recycling centers and in walking dogs and cleaning facilities.

Communication problems?

The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Services are confidential and a neutral person is available to help individuals.

Village of Bath Housing Authority Board

The Village of Bath Housing Authority Board will meet at 4 p.m. the forth Monday of every month (except where a Holiday occurs, then it will be held the week before.)

Dormann Library Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees of the Dormann Library will hold their next monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Empire Room of the Library Building, 101 W. Morris St., Bath.

Victims of Domestic Violence Women's Support Group

Victims of Domestic Violence Women's Support Group will meet from 6-7 p.m. Thursday evenings.

Senior trips

A Bath Village/Town senior trip will be held on August 8 to a luncheon cruise on Skaneatelas Lake and Thoroughly Modern Mille at the Merry Go Round Theater, Auburn. Sign ups will be held Monday, July 30 at 1 p.m. in the Board Room of the Village of Bath Municipal Building, 110 Liberty St., Bath.

Wine Country Toastmasters

Wine Country Toastmasters will beet the first and third Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. at the County Health Care Facility, Co. Rte. 113, Bath. The meeting will discuss enhancing communication and leadership skills.

Northeast Climate Change

Dr. David Wolfe, Prefessor of Plant Ecology at Crnell University, will present Northeast Climate Change: Impacts on Gardens, Forests and Farms at 10:30 a.m. July 28 at the Civil Defense Training Center, Route 54, Bath.

Bath VA Walking Tours

To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007.

Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is not cost to participate.

Steuben County Historical Society

The Steuben County Historical Society announces the following summer hours. The Magee House, located at the Dormann-Davenport Learning Complex, West Morris St. in Bath, will be open each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during July and August. Personnel will be on hand to staff the site and offer guided tours to visitors.

Seeking new farmers

The Cornell University Cooperative Extension is looking for new farmers who wish to be included in the 2007 edition of the Steuben County Guide to Agricultural Products. The Guide presently lists over 50 local farms with agricultural products for sale within the Steuben County. Applications will be considered from farms where at least 50% of the products sold are homegrown. To apply, pick up an application at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office, 3 E. Volunteer Mediators Wanted

The Center for Dispute Settlement is presently seeking public service minded individuals that would be interested in becoming a Volunteer Mediator in one of their three offices in Steuben County. School Supply Drive

Catholic Charities Turing Point in conjunction with Americorps and Centenary United Methodist Church are in the process of organizing their 2007 school supply drive for Bath area residents. Distribution date is August 24.

Catholic Charities are asking for donations between $50 and $500. 100% of the donation goes directly to the purchase of school supplies. Please make the check payable to Catholic Charities Turning Point with 2007 School Supply Drive in the memo.

First Presbyterian Church open for Sanctuary tours

The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Bath on Pulteney Square will be open to visitors on Wednesdays, July 18, 25 and August 1, 8, and 15 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tour guides will be on hand to help visitors observe the impressive work of Louis Confort Tiffany who created the sancutary's interior design ca 1895-7.

Golf tournament

The Greater Steuben Red Cross will hold their 10th Annual Golf Tournament July 16 at the Corning Country Club. All proceeds will stay local and go to assist in disaster preparedness and response.

The Red Cross is still looking for sponsors and has a few openings for teams. If you are a player and would like to join us, register soon, the first 22 teams to register will be golfing.

55 Alive Driving Course

AARP and the St. James Mercy Health System are teaming up to offer the 55 Alive Driving Course for adults ages 50 and over. The two-day course will be held from 1-5 p.m. July 18 and 20 in the hospital's Memorial Conference Room.

Participants who complete the 8-hour classroom refresher course may receive a 10% discount on their auto insurance for three years and points may be taken off their license. The cost is $10 and seating is limited.

VA updating patient records

VA Healthcare Nework Upstate New York will be updating all veterans' records during the upcoming months. The VA may contact veterans to verify or update their address; phone number; insurance information, including identification numbre; and other information. VA will not ask for Social Security numbers, as that is already on file.

An individual from the VA Veterans Contact Center will call and identify himself or herself as a VA employee. If veterans prefer, they can also update their information on their next vist.

Vacation bible school

• The Episcopal parishes of St. Thomas' Church in Bath and Church of the Good Shepherd in Savona have announced plans for their exciting 2007 Vacation Bible School.

The theme of Growing with God's Love will be carried out on five evenings from 5-8 p.m. July 30-Aug. 3 at St. Thomas' Church, 122 Liberty St., Bath. The event is free and open to children ages 5- 12. Each evening begins with a meal and concludes with worship.

• Bath Baptist Church will hold a Vacation Bible School from 6:30-8:30 p.m. July 16- 20. Children entering first grade through sixth grade n the fall are welcome to attend. Phineas Phixit and his puppets will appear nightly. There will also be Bible lessons, prizes, crafts, snacks, games and music. Children shuld try to wear the theme colors of gold (or yellow) on Monday, black on Tuesday, red on Wednesday, white on Thursday and green on Friday.

Parents are invited to a special closing program on Friday the 20 from 8-8:30 p.m.

Kiss a cow

Miss Joyce, Youth Services Coordinator at the Dormann Library is issuing a challenge to kids ages 3-grade 5. If 150 kids sign up for the "Get a Clue at Your Library" Reading Club and 60% (90 kids) read 5 hours or more she will kiss a cow.

Miss Joyce will kiss a cow at the Family Picnic Summer Finale on August 23 at about 7:30. So kids, come in, sign up, and READ!

Single Adult Fellowship will present a dance at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 21 featuring live music by T and The Goodtimes at the First Presbyterian Methodist Church, Painted Post. The dance is open to all divorced, widowed, seperated or never married. Must be 21years of

age to attend.

4th Annual Bath Community Picnic

The 4th Annual Bath Community Picnic will be held from 12-3 p.m. July 15 in Pulteney Park. There will be some entertainment as well as everyone's favorite Crime Fighting Canine, McGruff the Crime Dog. This years event is sponsored by the Bath Neighborhood Watch Group, Steuben Churchpeople Against Poverty, NeighborWorks America, the Bath Volunteer Fire Department and the Bath Police Department. Avoca Free Library meeting

The Avoca Free Library will hold their quarterly meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 16 at 18 Norgh Main St., Avoca. The public is welcome to attend.

Farmer Market coupons

The Steuben County Office for the Aging will distribute $20 booklets of Farmer Market coupons from 9 a.m. to noon July 18 at the following locations:

• Lakeview Apartments Nutrition Site, 105 Geneva St., Bath.

• Office for the Aging at the Corning Senior Center Building, 1 Park Lane, Corning.

• Office for the Aging at the Hornell Senior Center, 20 Broadway Mall, Hornell.

Coupons can be used to purchase locally grown furits and vegetables at participating farmers' markets throughout the area. To receive coupons at any of these three sites, recipients muct be Steuben County residents who are aged 60+ and must have income of $1,574/month or less for singles, $2,110/month or less for married couples. Coupons must be picked up in person by the recipient.

Since the number of coupon booklets is limited, they will be distributed on a first-come first-serve basis. Please call the office before visitingto check on availability of coupons. Bath office, 776-7813; Corning office, 936-4661; Hornell office, 324-4891.

Softball Challenge

The United Way Company Softball Challenge will be held from 4 p.m. till dusk August 22 and 23 at the Holding Point Recreation Complex, Horseheads. The event benefits the United Way of the Southern Tier.

Entry fee will be $100 per team. Entry fee is paid 100% to the United Way and 1st, 2nd and 3rd get to claim a portion of the entry fee as part of their special events. This event is for fun and raising awarness and money for the United Way. Dates will be subject th change due to either number of entrants and/or field availablility.

Bath Area Landlords meeting

Bath Police Chief David Rouse has announced that the next meeting of the Bath Landlords Association will be held at 7 p.m. July 25 in the Conference Room at Lakeview Apartments, 105 Geneva St., Bath. Landlords attending are asked to bring a copy of their lease and/or rental agreement.

The Board of Education of the Bath Central School District will hold a Regular Meeting at 7 p.m. July 18 in the District Office. Following the Regular Meeting the board of education will hold a building workshop.
