The American Legion Auxiliary of Unit 173 meets every second Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Charles Wescott Post on William St., Bath.

SPCA donations

The Finger Lakes SPCA is requesting area residents to continue donating returnable cans and bottles to the shelter on St. Rte. 54. The recyclable materials are a significant source of income for the SPCA.

Volunteers also are needed to assist in the delivery of returnable materials to recycling centers and in walking dogs and cleaning facilities.

Communication problems?

The Center for Dispute Settlement is offering a free service to Steuben County residents to help with communication skills. The service is for residents under the age of 21. Services are confidential and a neutral person is available to help individuals.

Village of Bath Housing Authority Board

The Village of Bath Housing Authority Board will meet at 4 p.m. the forth Monday of every month (except where a Holiday occurs, then it will be held the week before.)

Dormann Library Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees of the Dormann Library will hold their next monthly meeting at 5 p.m. Sept. 10 in the Empire Room of the Library Building, 101 W. Morris St., Bath.

Steuben County Historical Society

The Steuben County Historical Society announces the following summer hours. The Magee House, located at the Dormann-Davenport Learning Complex, West Morris St. in Bath, will be open each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during July and August. Personnel will be on hand to staff the site and offer guided tours to visitors.

Seeking new farmers

The Cornell University Cooperative Extension is looking for new farmers who wish to be included in the 2007 edition of the Steuben County Guide to Agricultural Products. The Guide presently lists over 50 local farms with agricultural products for sale within the Steuben County. Applications will be considered from farms where at least 50% of the products sold are homegrown. To apply, pick up an application at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office, 3 E. Volunteer Mediators Wanted

The Center for Dispute Settlement is presently seeking public service minded individuals that would be interested in becoming a Volunteer Mediator in one of their three offices in Steuben County. VA updating patient records

VA Healthcare Nework Upstate New York will be updating all veterans' records during the upcoming months. The VA may contact veterans to verify or update their address; phone number; insurance information, including identification numbre; and other information. VA will not ask for Social Security numbers, as that is already on file.

An individual from the VA Veterans Contact Center will call and identify himself or herself as a VA employee. If veterans prefer, they can also update their information on their next vist.

First Presbyterian Church open for Sanctuary tours

The sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Bath on Pulteney Square will be open to visitors on Wednesdays, July 25 and August 1, 8, and 15 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tour guides will be on hand to help visitors observe the impressive work of Louis Confort Tiffany who created the sancutary's interior design ca 1895-7.

School Supply Drive

Catholic Charities Turing Point in conjunction with Americorps and Centenary United Methodist Church are in the process of organizing their 2007 school supply drive for Bath area residents. Distribution date is August 24 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Bath, 6 Pulteney Square East, Bath. Sign ups will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. July 26 and August 7 at the Catholic Charities Turning Point, 23 Liberty St., Bath and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. August 6 at the First Presbyterian Church, Main St., Prattsburgh.

Students must be residents of Bah, Kanona, Savona, Cameron, Hammondsport, Prattsburgh or Bradford.

People are asked to sign up so that they have a better idea of the number of supplies that are needed. Those who are signed up will be served first.

Catholic Charities are asking for donations between $50 and $500. 100% of the donation goes directly to the purchase of school supplies. Please make the check payable to Catholic Charities Turning Point with 2007 School Supply Drive in the memo.

Vacation bible school

• The Episcopal parishes of St. Thomas' Church in Bath and Church of the Good Shepherd in Savona have announced plans for their exciting 2007 Vacation Bible School.

The theme of Growing with God's Love will be carried out on five evenings from 5-8 p.m. July 30-Aug. 3 at St. Thomas' Church, 122 Liberty St., Bath. The event is free and open to children ages 5-12. Each evening begins with a meal and concludes with worship.

• The Centenary United Methodist Church of Bath will hold a Vacation Bible School from1-3 p.m. July 23- 27 at Hickory Hill Camping Resort, 7531 Mitchellsville Rd., Bath. Friday, July 28 Family Gathering and Water Carnival will be held from 5- 7 p.m. at the Centenary UMC, 3 W. Washington St., Bath.

Children grades K-6 in the Greater Bath Community are welcome.

Registration will be held at Hickory Hill at 12:45 p.m. July 23 or first day you attend. A parent must accompany a child at registration time.

Kiss a cow

Miss Joyce, Youth Services Coordinator at the Dormann Library is issuing a challenge to kids ages 3-grade 5. If 150 kids sign up for the "Get a Clue at Your Library" Reading Club and 60% (90 kids) read 5 hours or more she will kiss a cow.

Miss Joyce will kiss a cow at the Family Picnic Summer Finale on August 23 at about 7:30. So kids, come in, sign up, and READ!

Softball Challenge

The United Way Company Softball Challenge will be held from 4 p.m. till dusk August 22 and 23 at the Holding Point Recreation Complex, Horseheads. The event benefits the United Way of the Southern Tier.

Entry fee will be $100 per team. Entry fee is paid 100% to the United Way and 1st, 2nd and 3rd get to claim a portion of the entry fee as part of their special events. This event is for fun and raising awarness and money for the United Way. Dates will be subject th change due to either number of entrants and/or field availablility.

American Red Cross course schedule

• A babysitting class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 26 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The course is for youths ages 11-14. The course will teach responsibilities of a babysitter, accident prevention, emergency first aid, and how to prepare for a babysitting job. The cost is $40.

• A babysitter's instructor course will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The cost to attend the course is $50.

• A disaster course, disaster assessment will be held from 6-9 p.m. July 23 at the Bath American Red Cross chapter office. The course is open to anyone who would like to volunteer in a disaster situation and is free to the public.

Bluebarry Blast

Blueberry Blast will be held from 4-7 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 3 W. Washington Blvd., Bath. The menu is as follows: yummy blueberry deserts, homemade ice cream and frech blueberries by the quart. Take outs available.

A book signing by Chelsey Keeler will be held at the event. She is the author of Peek-A-Blue Berry Farm "Classic Blueberry Recipes."

Bath VA Walking Tours

To demonstrate the pride of the Bath VA, the Bath VA Dietetic Staff will conduct walking tours of the grounds every Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. until Sept. 29, 2007.

Veterans, employees, and their families as well as the general public are welcome to join the tours and there is not cost to participate.

Pre-Kindergarten program

Applications are being accepted or the 2007-2008 Avoca Central School Head Start Program and district Universal Pre- Kindergarten program. Avoca school will provide a curriculum based program that meets New York State Learning Standards and heldps children develop physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and creatively.

Children must be 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2007. Applications will be taken at the Avoca Central school from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 8.

"Run For Help" 5K Race will be held at 6:35 p.m. at Craig Park, West High St., Painted Post. Registration

will be held from 5:15-6:15 p.m.

Pre-registration will be held July 30 and will be and registration will be $15 after July 30 and day of race.

Awards to overall male and female and to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category.

Categories include: 18 and under, 19-29, 30-39, 40- 49, 50-59 and 60 and over.
